Has anyone managed to get this working on a Java-based phone?

Does anyone have a link for the installer?

Have a look on the google website the details are there! You cant have tried very hard to find it.
Anyway go to mobile.google.com on your phone and select Maps(Download).
I should point out that at the moment it doesn't support quite a few uk phones.

That is NOT Google Maps for Mobile!!!

GMM is an application you download to your phone to enable you to view map and satellite images of anywhere in the world. It looks brilliant, but I can't find how to install it on my phone, which I am assured IS supported.

I have Google Maps installed on my k750i, and I installed it by entered my phone numbers into a Google ad that was on the front page of DS.

Its up to you whether you believe me or not but you could at least try it. Did the word Download not tell you it was a download?
