Marc Almond 'Stardom Road'
Marc Almond's new album 'Stardom Road' came out on the 4th June. Since I got it yesterday I have played it to death A real masterpiece. Great return to form considering all he's been through (the near fatal bike crash). It's a selection of cover versions that have influenced his musical work plus a new song of his own. His version of Gene Pitney's 'Backstage' has a particularly poignant edge given how Gene died (after a concert). 'Strangers In The Night' is one of the tracks. Some people may think that's a strange choice but it works!! The track of his own 'Redeem Me' is Marc back to his usual bittersweet self. I really can't pick a favourite because I love it all a rare thing in an album these days!! It's got my friend who less than 2 weeks ago, said "he couldn't see what he saw in his work anymore" eating his words as he loves it.
Tracklisting: I Have Lived I Close My Eyes And Count To Ten (With Sarah Cracknell) Bedsitter Images The London Boys Strangers In The Night The Ballad of the Sad Young Man (with Antony Hegarty from Antony and the Johnsons) Stardom Road Kitsch Backstage I'm Lonely (Featuring Jools Holland) Dream Lover Happy Heart Redeem Me (Beauty Will The World) The Curtain Falls |

I saw him on this morning a couple of days ago. He mentioned the song "backstage i'm lonely" was written in tribute to Gene Pitney.

It is indeed a splendid album, even more so because it might never have been made. I for one am ever thankful that Marc is still here and able to deliver such fantastic songs.
PS Backstage wasn't actually written by Marc, Gene Pitney sang it years ago. Apparently Marc's added some lyrics for his version on Stardom Road, but I'm not sure yet which bit as I've now become more familiar with Marc's version than I was with Gene's. This is due to huge re-playing of Stardom Road . Especially "Kitsch"!
