Recording Sky to HDD
cybernetuk

I know this is probably a dumb question but I have searched around and am not entirely sure if its possible. I have Sky (not sky+) and I need a new DVD recorder. If I get a Sony DVD/HDD recorder, will the HDD be able to record from Sky or is that just for freeview stuff. If it isnt possible then I might as well just get the DVD recorder.

BTW I know this isn't totaly a Sony specific question its just I would most likely buy a Sony model when I get one.
Thanks!

As long as you buy an analogue DVD/HDD recorder then it will work fine - but you need to make sure it will record from analogue inputs, and NOT just digitally direct from FreeView.

?

All the Sony DVD/HDD recorders will record an RGB signal beautifully off a scart connection from a Sky box. The recorders without built-in Freeview (the RDR-HX... series rather than the RDR-HXD... ones) are even designed to use a Sky box (standard or plus) as their tuner, and will control channel changes on the Sky box to make recordings.

Your main choices will be (a) built-in Freeview tuner or not and (b) how big a hard disk. (Oh, and judging from the volume of gripes in here, avoid the old 710 models!) I've had an HX725 (no tuner, 160 GB disk) for about 8 months, running off a standard Sky box, and I'm highly delighted with it. Other models have also had "good press" here -- take a browse through the old threads.

This does not really help, but I have got a 910 (no longer in production) which is FreeView only and this will happily record from SKY on input line 3. I would imagine any of the current SONY HDD DVD combo models would be fine for you.

Ultimately there are lots of people who want to use these machines to archive their VHS tapes to DVD. It would not be in SONY's interest to make a machine that does not accept an analogue (ie SCART) input. Just make sure you steer clear of the Hard Disk only recorders, these are less likely to be able to record from an external source.
