High Road
Scottish Soap High Road ended tonight on Scottish and Grampian after 23 years on air. It was a nice ending but was very sad to see it go. I know veiwers in parts of South England lost the soap about 2 years ago. I just think regional programes are slowly being done way with. Anyone else think this and is sad tio see such a great Scottish soap come to an end after so long.

Darren Tonight's episode was awful - Doddery old Lachie couldn't even find the time to get a haircut for his wedding but Isobel Blair had time to come from Africa. I think it was Morag's outfit that scared the pigs into breaking out - afterwards the sight of her with her skirt hitched up exposing those legs - scared me. What bride would go to their wedding reeking of piggydo, splattered in muck and riding on a motorbike? To crown it all the mafiosa are surveying the land in order to build a gigantic entertainment complex wiping out Glendarroch as we know it. For heavens sake what a fairytale. This was once an incredibly good soap that tackled many important issues such as rape, cancer, bereavement etc. Laterly it was an embarrassment.

![]() If High Road was intended to be a twee little Scottish comedy it should not have been classed as a drama.

The Final Episode of High Road
Just thought I'd add some more details of the final episode, for those of you who won't see it for ages and those who won't see it ever! Sorry this is so long!:
The final episode of “High Road”: The episode basically revolves around Mairi and Lachie’s wedding day. Neither Isabel (in Africa) or Kitty will be able to make it. Everyone goes to the church, leaving Mairi and Morag waiting for Chic, who is driving them to the church. But Lachie doesn’t lock the pigs up properly, so Mairi, Morag and Chic have to run around the yard rounding them up. After the pigs are sorted, the wedding car won’t start. While everyone is at the wedding, Nigel meets with Mr Spinetti, who outlines his plans to buy up Glendarroch, knock it all down and build a tourist resort with hotels, cinemas, theatres and bars. Nigel tells him he can’t do that, but Mr Spinetti basically says he can do anything he likes. (This is the closest thing to a cliffhanger we get, by the way.) Jockie and Effie still aren’t speaking, because of her almost-affair. They are NOT reconciled by the end of the show. Niall agrees to go to the wedding as Sally’s date, and borrows a suit from Sneddon to wear. After much prompting from Sally, Sheila finally sees the resemblance between Niall and Davie and realises they are father and son. In the nick of time, Lafferty arrives and whisks Mairi off to the church on the back of his motorbike. When they get to the village, Isabel is there after all and walks Mairi down the aisle. Both Kitty and Mairi’s daughter Lynne also manage to make the ceremony. All goes well: Morag and Chic arrive at the church in a tractor but have missed the wedding. And really, that was about it. The episode ended with the entire cast (and a load of extras) walking past the camera as they left the church after the wedding. The final words spoken were Mairi and Lachie: LACHIE: “That’ll do, lass” MAIRI: “Aye, that’ll do” They laugh and walk off, followed by the rest of the cast, as a piper plays “Mairi’s Wedding” over the credits. The end credits finish with the following: “Since 1980 High Road has been a piece of Scotland in homes across the UK and overseas. Scottish Television would like to thank the cast, the crews and the writers who worked on High Road over the years. High Road 1980-2003” Thoughts? Well, it was nice that everything finished reasonably happy. It was good that Isabel and the others came back for the wedding (the real actors too, though Kitty and Lynne did not get a single line between them). Everything was pretty rushed (the resolution of the Niall-Sneddon plot particularly) and we could have done without Mr Spinetti, who was absolutely dreadful, with horrible yellow teeth. The overall feeling we were left with was that it was sad that it was over, but that STV had treated it abominably and done everything they could to kill it off. Yes, it was corny and twee and stupid at times, but it was still massively popular up here and didn’t deserve such a slow, lingering death (this episode was filmed THREE YEARS AGO!!!) Whatever else you can say about High Road, at least it wasn’t River City – now would anyone really shed any tears if that lame dog got shot? Sorry for rambling on again, hope this is of some use! |

Final Episode (Addendum)
Forgot to put this in, the full final episode cast (in credits order) was as follows:
Isabel Blair ~ EILEEN MCCALLUM Sheila Ramsay ~ LESLEY FITZ-SIMONS Effie McDonald ~ MARY RIGGANS Jockie McDonald ~ JACKIE FARRELL Mairi McIvor ~ ANNE MYATT Lachie McIvor ~ ALEC HEGGIE Morag Kerr ~ JEANNIE FISHER Tom Kerr ~ JOHN STAHL Mrs Mack ~ GWYNETH GUTHRIE Victor Kemp ~ IAIN ANDREW Nigel Jenkins ~ KEITH WARWICK Davie Sneddon ~ DEREK LORD Niall Cassidy ~ BARRY LORD Sally McGann ~ CATRIONA EVANS Sarah McDonald ~ SHONAGH PRICE Baby Sadie ~ COURTNEY JANE MOWATT P.C. Tony Piacentini ~ ALAN MCHUGH Chic Cherry ~ ANDY CAMERON Paul Lafferty ~ SIMON WEIR Ewan Logan ~ GORDON BROWN Mr Spinetti ~ TERRY WALE Kitty McIvor ~ SARAH GUDGEON Lynne McNeill ~ GILLIAN MCNEILL Surveyor ~ RONNIE SIMON Like I said, Kitty and Lynne had no lines, they just waved at the church and hugged Lachie & Mairi respectively. Ewan the postman got no lines either, he's just seen in the church at the end. The only regular not to appear in the final episode is Dr Douglas Clark, played by John Kazek, who appears in the last few months of the soap. |

RIVER CITY is much better than pathetic show High Road. Viewers in England with Sky could have still tuned in using add channels and watching Scottish TV that way!
