According to reports in the press, the BBC are already in talks with legendary producer Robert Stigwood to secure the rights for Saturday Night Fever next year.....

Well, quite. I mean, that girl who won the Maria show last year -- where is she now? Connie who?

Jokig apart, I think the ITV and BBC shows running concurrently have shown how important the format of the show is to driving a success. *If* the format were to be revived next year, I'd like to see some changes (the most notable is that while ALW stated repeatedly that this wasn't a singing competition, the very structure of the show encouraged voters at home to think of it as such).

Ultimately, though, this show has probably done more to demystify the concept of musical theatre as a profession than anything else -- hopefully many young lads will feel encouraged to participate in a local level at a young age, and investigate whether an MT career is for them.

Apparently the only show that ALW will do is Jesus Christ Superstar but the BBC are hesitating because of the religious overtones

That's also been done in the West End and a nationwide tour really recently hasn't it? Ordinary theatre producers would not normally touch something that's just had a run so not sure it's wise for the BBC to try something that everyone's seen in the last few years.

Because Joseph didn't have any religious overtones

My wife asked me tonight if they were doing another show like this next year.

I said the thing with that is would you not get similar people auditioning that missed out last time, for instance if it was a female part next year then would a lot of the Maria's audition again.

I know they are working as Connie mentioned it tonight, but if they thought it was a chance of a major part then would you not just get the same people all the time.

TV, LEAVE THEATRE ALONE! WE DON'T WANT RINGERS WE WANT GENUINE TALENT AND FAIRLY WON.

So done of what we've had over the past few Saturday nights.

We don't want TV killing musical theatre like they have Big Brother just for a fast buck to get one of ALW's ringers in the show anyway. ”

Yeah too right
Instead of giving them smoething written for a school to perform by a trite composer
why not find someone with talent who will have to perform intelligent and complicated songs
like Bernstein or Sondheim instead of an ugly mans, ugly music.
I don't care if he has made money, this is not through any musical talent, but finding the right people to work with.

I think a break from these musical shows of a couple of years is needed, other wise the talent will get less and less and we will be oversaturated with reality tv stars in the west end.

The next one will most probably be JCS though.

I hope it's not Jesus Christ Superstar, I tried to watch the film of that once and it was very boring. I can see why the BBC are hesitant, on one hand you get religious groups calling it blasphemy and on the other you get people questioning why the BBC is funding two big Saturday night shows in a row that pay lipservice to a Christian theme. I vote for a secular show next year, maybe a non-ALW one (although keep him onboard).

I like the reality show aspect combined with genuine talent and the fabulous gloss of musical theatre, and I hope they do have a show like this again next year. I like the idea of looking for two leads like in Grease, but looking at the ratings, the BBC need to be very careful to maintain their successful format and not stray into GITW territory too much.

How about Ben for the part of Tony Monero

Or if we are going for a female lead what about Evita, I think a few of the girls who auditioned for Maria would have another go. Think Simmona or Helena/Belinda could play Eva Peron

I think WEST SIDE STORY would be a good one to cast especially after the three boys sang "Maria" so well last night.

I don't thik bens vocals are strong enough for a west end show yet - maybe straight acting would be more his thing, or a purely dancing part in something.

I just wonder if the lads who auditioned for Joseph, would be in line for the part of Tony Monero, Lewis has a showman in him, maybe he could do it.

And if they do Evita, three girls who auditioned for Maria could do a job as Eva Peron, such as Helena, Belinda or Simmona

They won't do Evita - it's only just closed with an unknown leading lady in the main role (in fact at the very theatre where Joseph is going to be playing)

The thought of Belinda as ANYTHING is terrifying. Terrible attitude and not a great actress. I saw Helena recently in the company of "Night of 1000 Voices" at the Royal Albert Hall. She was ok - but her voice is very shrill. Simmona would be a perfect Evita - and I suspect if the recent show had run longer, ALW would have considered putting her in.

I'm not sure about Lewis as Tony Monero - he's physically all wrong. Ben is more suitable - but to be honest - I don' t think they'd let them go through to the final 12 again. It's more likely that some of the Grease is the Word finalists will go for it - as it is closer to the role of Danny than it is to Joseph.

As I've posted before - it's a tricky one to do. Can you imagine Graham saying - "Is Lewis Jesus? You decide!!!"

Haha, he'd make a great Frank 'n' Furter.

It'd be entertaining to see them search for Starlight Express, can you imagine them all falling about the place trying to skate :')

There's no decent leading role in Cats - other than Grizabella - who sings Memory - but she isn't on stage any more than Elaine Paige currently is in The Drowsy Chaperone!

Cabaret - for Sally - would be interesting - but again - it's currently on in the West End with Kim Medcalf - so I would think it's unlikely they'll choose that.

Mrs Johnstone in Blood Brothers would be interesting.....another Bill Kenwright show......and one for the more mature lady.

How about Sunset Boulevard?

They could try out for either the male or female role (with the already other role cast and that actor on the judging panel).

Barrowman was great in the lead male role so no doubt would end up on the panel again. It would need an older person in the role so rule out getting all of the 18 year olds trying out again so different talent this time.
