Yes he could have continued in the theatre in the role of understudy, but Joseph gave him the chance to showcase his talents as leading man material - well done him for grasping the opportunity.
He was never nasty about the other contestants, he was quietly confident about his abilities but he respected all his fellow would be Josephs, and the constant cries of fix throughout the series could have led to a serious backlash against him; voters might either have assumed he was safe, so voted for someone else or believed the rumours and turned against him.
Naughty, naughty GBP for letting you down but the fact is they voted for Lee because that is who they wanted to see in the technicolour dreamcoat. He was the best.
