New box [Pic]

Just seen this in gadget magazine T3. The new Tiscali Box. Looks l;ike they've swapped the blue light for a green one (Tiscali's colours after all) and plonked it on top of a hard disk unit. Also looks like the Wi-Fi router's built in too (there's an aerial, see)... Looks good, but about three times the height of the original...

I think the original box looks nicer, but I'm glad it's not the uglyTelsey box someone on here claims to have. I wonder if the top section is an optional, removable wireless router? Hope so. (My Airport Express is much neater!)

it looks like the top section is a modem/ routerand the bottom is the actual set top box

Not sure. I think the bottom's probably the hard drive bit. Routers aren't actually that big - just a circuit board, whereas hard drives are quite thick (sometimes an inch thick) so it'd make sense for the TV & Wi-Fi (core package) to be in one box, with the PVR (optional extra) in another that just bolts on when or if you subscribe.

Also, when the guy came to install my HC about a year ago he said they were working on a wireless box to plug into the phone, which sends the telly signal as well as broadband signal to the STB - saves engineers trailing wires around and makes home installs much more efficient (so they can lay off some installers and still get the same amount of work done). Maybe that's why the Wi-Fi's now built in.

Thinking about it, it makes sense. Even with 8meg broadband there's still lots of room to spare in a router's 54mbps capability.

Its very hard to see what the actual box looks like from that pic, but I must agree it does look better than the Telsy Box. However, I do think they should have stuck with the blue light . It would be very interesting to see the new pricing structure, i.e. PVR pricing, and a HD pricing. Particularly as Sky's HD service is a ludacris price.

I think the green light is a good idea - helps CS to identify which box the customer has.

Sky's HD price is a little steep at £10pcm but I can see why they are charging a minimal number of their customers that - what are their extra broadcast costs for this?

Although Tiscali don't have to pay Sat costs their backhaul requirements for broadcast HD will be higher so I'd be happy with a small increase if we got a handful of broadcast HD channels with the new box.

On a similar note I found the following description of the internal of the old box here

Which issue of T3 is this - I've just looked at the July issue (Yellow cover with Magic Eye picture - if you look hard enough you can see a mobile phone!) and it just has the standard silver box on page 85. Do you have the August issue by any chance??

If this is launching in July, have they even hinted at the service details?

It looks like the bottom box is a reflection, so it may be just one small box.

very true BUT
if you look with care you notice that the bottom section is higher with a shadow underneth.
if it was a reflection the size would be them same and the shadow on top.
so it dose look like 2 box's of some sort stacked one on top of the over

one set top box one modem who knows Not tiscali anyway

When I spoke to them on the phone the other day they categorically said it would be ONE box.

It's possible that their TV, PVR, Internet Access is via one box and that the top section is just a very similar looking wireless access point.

The number of people who end up here having bought an ADSL router rather than a cable router makes it quite a good idea to package the too together and make both look pretty neat.

Also, it begs the question of how much HD content there will actually be to watch - not a lot I'd guess...

There's another picture in the latest issue of Stuff - double-height black box with 2 green lights and wireless antenna.

Incidentally, Stuff claims that the launch date is 5th July.

Hold on a sec! That's today!

Today is 5th July and still no news.

Except Farncombe Technology being appointed to help with the national rollout.
I thought that was to be launched today?

TV technology consultancy Farncombe Technology (FTL) has been appointed to aid Tiscali UK in its nationwide triple-play network rollout with the appointment of Dr Stephen Upton, FTL's CEO, as its interim director of technology operations.

Tiscali TV was launched on 1 March 2007 to existing customers and will be rolled out over the summer, becoming available to over 10 million UK homes by the end of the year. Upton’s role will be to optimise the performance of Tiscali’s unbundled IPTV, voice and broadband network and complete the integration of VNL’s (Video Networks Limited) networks in London and Stevenage.

Mary Turner, CEO Tiscali UK, says: “The successful rollout of our triple-play network and services is central to our strategy and therefore it is important that we have in place the best expertise to achieve this.”

“Andrew Glasspool, FTL’s founder, says: “Dr Upton has unrivalled expertise in the construction and operation of triple-play networks. Tiscali’s decision to deploy FTL for this important project is a testimony to his expertise and to our expansion into this new area of TV delivery networks.”

Upton, who ran cable giant NTL’s next-generation network as MD of the company’s Networks Division, joined FTL last December alongside Jean-Marc Racine, former executive vice-president of marketing for Canal+ Technologies.
