Calvin Harries - I Created Disco
This album is very listenable.
I took over a week to get nearing liking the editors new one but within a few mins I was liking this. I was in fact worried that the more I listened to this the more I would get a bit bored and some of the songs don't stand up to repeated listens as much as the others. So Calvin Harris is nearly 10 younger than me but it seems he is influenced by a lot of the stuff I listend to as a teenager. I was totally into the electro scene at the age of 14+ and that kind of sound I still love and a lot of this took me back to 80s when I listened to the early 'rap' stuff, neucleus herbie hancok etc. It was a bit like 'this is the album I would have loved to have made' a few years ago kind of thing. Not that it's dated or anything just it's got loads of old skool sounding beats etc. His lyrics tho let it down a bit I think. He mentions drugs quite a bit but it it's a bit try-hardy for me. OK so here are my thoughts track by track: Merrymaking At My Place I don't like using the word 'Phat' but please excuse me while I do - for this base line is on the over weight side, has a touch of Lapdance about it. This is very listenable, the lyrics grate a little on the 4th or 5th listen, i wish he would have toned down the drug side of things and did the in my house thing - maybe that would be a bit too LCD soundsystem - anyway - like this song - good start! Colours FUnky little track this, def electro feel to it - which I love. It also has a witty little sample (steal?) of 'we fade to grey' before the chorus of 'get some colours on' another strong song for me! This Is The Industry mmm this is a bit of a let down in comparison to the first two and does Calvin's repeat lyrics ad nauseum type of thing which lets a lot of the album down. Still pretty good sound to it. Girls ace you know it Acceptable In The 80s see above Neon Rocks I love this song, very laid back, again takes me back to my early teenage years but has a bit of a modern twist on it. Again lyrics aren't that much IMO Traffic Cops indulgent 8 second song - trying to fill the album titles or something - what the hell? Vegas I actually thought this was a remix of acceptible in the 80's when I first heard it - it's the same riff! very lazy, lyrics - blah could easily ignore this, gets interesting a la chem bros about 3.20 for 2 secs - should have explored that a bit more! I Created Disco This sounds a bit like a kid trying stuff in his bedroom, with a speach sample in the middle which is kinda interesting but overall not one of my favourites, not bad tho just not stand out like the first half of the album. Disco Heat find this one a bit boring TBH, riff seems a bit familiar too - bit of a filler, but not a floor one. Vault Character 6 second indugent nothing Certified oooh this starts good, one of those tracks you hear and go - 'yeah' straight away, no vocals so is good - kinda like crystal method (well a bit) - I likey Love Souvenir Lots of strings to start , bit of a slow one, not really my cup of tea. Electro Man absolutely terrible lyrics - and he suonds like the guy from right said fred!! yuck. Even the cowbells don't sell this. Overall some of the songs are so strong it makes the others sound a bit mediocre but it's all quite easy to get into. Will be interesting to see him live on Sat. My tracks of choice are Merrymaking girls 80's colours neon rocks certified |

It is a great album and he performs it really well live.
I saw him live last night as well as at the Isle Of Skye festival a few weeks ago and he really does have good stage presence and gets the crowd involved. |

I have to agree. He's surely just a butch version of the equally dreadful Mika. WTF is happening in the music biz these days? |

WTF have you been listening to if you think he sounds like Mika?
They are totally diiferent. I'm not saying he sounds like Mika, it's just that he inhabits the same kind of demographic fanbase, I would imagine, although maybe a slightly butcher one . They are both filed under A for Appalling in my book and N for Novelty. Seriously, even tho' I hated it, I can 'sort of' understand why a certain type of person would have liked 'Acceptable In The Eighties' but, jesus h. christ, what redeeming feature has his new single got exactly?

OK, yes - Calvin Harris is absolutely awful. However, I am a fan of Mika and feel as though there can be no comparison drawn between the two.
The key differences are that Mika is a classically trained singer, who is immensely talented, writes his own songs and has produced an excellent and diverse pop album. Harris, on the other hand - is the opposite to all the above. |

I think the two singles he's released so far and the only good songs on the album.

I can't understand how anyone over 12 and is male can like that fool - I'm sure Mika has quite a fan base but it is lost on me TBH! Still looking forward to seeing Harris tho! *checks I spelled it right* - phew

Love both the singles. Haven't bought many albums this year. This is probably one I'll take a chance on.

PS Saw 'Our Calvin' on Channel 4's coverage of the 02 Festival earlier today, he did an accoustic song that, judging by the amount of times he 'sang' house in it, suspect it has that word in the title? He's a no-talent waste of space who will last maybe 18 months in the business - max. Crikey.

Mika however, is classically trained, like it or not. |

Aaahhh, maybe i didn't word it correctly as the 'you people' was meant for the Calvin Huggers in this thread. I'll reserve the 'you people' for you if I ever dare venture into the Mika thread. However, I don't think I could have made it plainer that I was agreeing with you in the sense that Mika is classically trained, but everything else you said about him is IMHO nonsense.

Electro Man is one of my favourite songs ever! Best track on the album in my opinion.

I've only heard 'Acceptable in the 80s' but that doesn't inspire me to want to hear any more of Mr Harris' attempts at musical expression. In my book it truly is a strong contender for the worst song ever written.
Do any of you ever set some kind of nonsensical repetitive phrase to some cretinous totally obvious 'tune' that you sing over and over to yourself while you're washing the dishes? I do, and judging by 'Acceptable in the 80s', Calvin Harris does too. Difference is, me and all the other musically ungifted idiots who indulge in this unfortunate habit, forget ours as soon as we've stacked the last saucer; Calvin goes and sets some godawful faux-80s GarageBand backing track to his, releases it as a single and cleans up. |

Can't believe how much stick Calvin has taken on this thread!
It is of course all about opinions but I absolutely love his album , the best two singles are obviously his best two efforts with 'The Girls' my fave song of all time
