How to connect everything

Hi, could I have some advice on the best way to connect my dvd, sky digibox & vcr to my tv as I only have 2 scarts on my tv and I use 1 for Sky and one for my vcr (bear in mind I am not a technophobe) cheers .....Rob

I'm not sure if this will help, but here goes:

My setup: On Digital STB, DVD Player, VCR (2 Scart sockets), TV (2 Scart Sockets) and a playstation.

I have my Digibox going into the auxilliary port of the DVD player with a Scart cable. The DVD out then goes to the VCR in, also with a Scart cable. The VCR out then goes to the TV AV1, with a Scart cable.

My playstation then connects to AV2 of the TV, also with a Scart cable.

My VCR also has 2 RCA composites out to my stereo.

As I say, don't know how helpful this is, but it may just be useful.

I have the same arrangement and I connect up as follows:

connect the video scart to the SkyDigital 'VCR' scart socket, connect the 'TV' Scart socket on the SkyDigitall box to your TV AV1 scart socket.

Connect the DVD to Scart socket AV2 on your TV

Using it this way means that when you play a video, it is routed via the digital box and into the TV. When you view Sky, it is displayed and will override the video.

To record Sky, on the video you must select the Scart1 as the source to record Sky.

Hope this helps

Yet doing it that way will mean you will not be able to watch DVDs in glorious RGB, only S-Video at best if you have selected this on AV2.

A better way (if you have 2 scarts on the back of your DVD)

Is to connect your STB to the SCART in on your DVD and then from your DVD to AV1.

If not then you will need a SCART switch box (I reccommend B-Tech, but AVOID cheap 'Argos ones') which will allow up to 3 RGB devices to connect to one TV SCART socket.

You can even tap out the audio and video and route it to an amp or VCR to whatever input is selected.

If you have a games console that has RGB output then the switchbox is your only option.

DO NOT COMPROMISE WITH COMPOSITE AND S-VIDEO CONNECTIONS

Quite right kevo, but I thought it better to show the simplest way for a beginner to all this....

Decent TVs really need RGB on both scart sockets, sadly most don't....

I only have 0ne scart socket on my player (it's a JVC XV-522 any good?) so I'll use Orbitalzones method it seems ok to me. The other problem is my sony amp does not have an optical or co-ax input just separate 5:1 inputs and dvd 2 channel and my dvd has optical, co-ax and analogue 2ch outputs am I missing out?
Cheers ....Rob.

Don't know much about your DVD player so I can't say whether it's any 'good' or not.

Just make sure you use the S-video option on AV2 on your TV.

You will only be able to hear Dolby Digital 5.1/DTS via optical, co-axial or separate channel outputs.

Yes you will miss out BIG TIME as the best you will be able to outpout from your DVD via 2 phono outputs is good old fashioned Dolby-Pro Logic, which believe me is no where near as good as DD5.1 (compare colour to B+W, Stereo to mono, Man Utd to Man City etc..you get my drift).

I'm curious to know what make and model "DD5.1 Amp" you have, as I assumed they all came with one or both kinds of digital inputs. Are you sure it isn't just a decoder that requires separate amps for each channel?

Either way you may need to upgrade your DVD player (one that has separate channel outputs) or your Amp that has a digital input.

Good luck

My amp is a Sony integrated AV amp model-TE-VE150. I bought my dvd ON IMPULSE ON FRIDAY, (A FOOL AND HIS MONEY ARE EASILY PARTED) so changing it now is not an option, I should of came here and asked for advice first, hindsight is a wonderful thing, enough of these cliches.
Any more advice welcome.
Cheers.....Rob

No not really, only what I said before.

Although, if you only bought your DVD player on Friday then I'm sure the shop would exchange it for a different model. But expect to pay more for one that has separate channel outputs and TWO SCART SOCKETS.

Just a quick question
Who sells B-tech scart switch boxes.
The ones from Lektropacks and Keene only have 1 RGB enabled scart out of the 3 or 4 on the switch box.

I'm not too sure who sells them on the High St.
I ordered mine through one of our suppliers at work, CPC (Preston).

You could try....
