Right, before some of you purists have an heart attack, try to keep an open mind. Since the doctor can regenerate and return as a different person, Why can't he come back as Colin Salmon or Adrian Lester?

Purist?

Is there anyone who only ever wants the Doctor to be white & wacky?

So long as he stays British in accent, and male in gender, he can be any race under the sun to my mind. I think Colin Salmon would be a great choice - he's been in the rumour mill on and off since 2004

Not a bad idea but traveling into the past as a black person on earth can have it's difficulties (as seen with Martha).

It could cause stories to get bogged down in explanations.

Alternatively I suppose the doctor just appears in different ways to different people, a bit like psychic paper.

People who feel he has always been white and want him to stay that way.

People feel that him becoming black is going against some geeky sci-fi thing.

I didn't think of that.

That could explain why the Daleks and other Time Lords always seem to recognize him.

Because he looks like a 200 foot tall demon with blood dripping from his fangs and red eyes? Cool!

I still see him as a guy in a pinstripe suit though...which begs the question...do I have a phobia of tax collectors and lawyers?

We all know that the only reason why the Docotor would ever be made black would be so the show would be politically coreect.

I cannot foresee the day when they pick a coloured actor becuase he was the best from all interviewed on merit but they will pick one to pander to lefties or to be cool and different.

To be honest we need another older doctor again - a real thesp and one who doesnt gurn and be over-wacky.

personally I'd love to see Adrian Lester in the role.

On having an older doctor much as I'd like the idea I don't think its going to happen..I believe the stresses and strains of the long filming have been cited by the production team as to them favouring younger actors

Do I read this correctly? You're saying that a black actor could never be the first choice on merit alone?

While I'd never accept a female Doctor (he's a bloke!) I'd accept a black Doctor, still not sure it'd be the best move though, might vome across as just a publicity stunt.

For some strange reason, Sam Neil just popped into my head as an idea. Perhaps hes too old and too Hollywood (or ex-Hollywood ) though too?

Lets get Patrick Stewart as the Dr. That'd merge pretty much all viewers of the scifi fiction genre but also more marketable to the US.

That and he's an amazing actor. give him whack, psychotic, depressed, or just plain vengeful...he can pull off the lot

No.

I can think of several brilliant coloured actors to get the role like Adrien Lester, Sindey Poiteir, Laurecne Fishburne, Derek Griffiths etc.

The BBC would overlook a great black actor to cast someone cool and trendy and 'wiv da kids' - in fact they would prbably make Ian Wright the Doctor...

i may get flamed for this BUT

would they ever cast the role of Shaft as a white guy

how about Blade ?

not that id have a problem with a asian or black or any other colour doctor as long as he was the best actor for the role

some parts are for black people and some parts are for white people

Shaft was stereotypically black, so of course a white person wouldn't really work in that role. Blade however isn't particularly "black" so he could be any race.

In the case of DW, he isn't stereotypically white - he's British and barmy, that's it. So he could work as a black character or Asian character or whatever.

Too old or too Hollywood.

But, I agree with you.

You know we are discussing the possibility of having a black doctor, right?

If more people had that attitude, he'd never have had Michael Clarke Duncan's fantastic performance as Kingpin - arguably one of the few good things about the original cut of Daredevil.

The key point is, in spite of that, of course, the Doctor regularly changes what he looks like as a person, Blade does not. Therefore when one casts Blade, on does so to find someone who looks like the established image of Blade. There is no established image of Docs 11, 12 and 13. Well... Hmm... 13 is shaky, actually. But I don't know my old-school DW enough to speak confidently on that subject.

Don't see any reason why a black or asian or any other coloured actor couldn't be cast as the Doctor.
Same criteria applies regardless of colour- As long as the actor can "own" the part, he can do it!
As a point of historical interest, I can't recall any Coloured actor playing a Timelord at all from the original series!
Can anyone remember one?
Makes a change from the 'ol chant of "Cast a woman as the Doctor"!

You could cast anyone as the Doctor and it wouldn't bother me, as long as he/she is likable in the roll.

Something else to consider though - Why does David Tennant not speak with his natural Scottish accent?

The writers and producers seem to stipulate that they want the Doctor to be a very middle-class Englishman because that's the way it's always been.
Only now with the new series' does the Doctor seem to be peeling away from the 'middle-class' label.

Having a black/asian Doctor would be a political statement and acknowledgement of a multicultural Britain by the BBC. Sadly, many wouldn't see talent, just a black actor.

Interesting to note he's not the first to have to do so. McGann disguised (and still does on Big Finish) his normal scouse accent when playing the 8th Doctor. Although McCoy's 7th Doctor retained his natural Scottish lilt.
