First impressions?

I would dearly love to buy a true 1080p plasma, but I can't find one of these to look at and I don't see any reviews around either.

They are only about to be released in the UK this month. Some sites are advertising them and taking orders but no-one appears to have received any stock yet.

It's disappointing that none of Panasonic's PZ700 series accept 1080p24, when a number of cheaper LCDs do. Not that I would buy an LCD, but a plasma in this price class should do 24p. Panasonic is lagging behind other manufacturers in this area.

I know films are shot at 24 fps, but the whole way film is displayed at the cinema is obviously completely different to how TV's work. With LCD, a pixel is on forever unless its turned off. So showing material at 24Hz won't show any flicker. Even 1 Hz it won't "flicker" although motion wouldn't be very smooth obviously.

But phosphor-based technology such as CRT or plasma decays until the next refresh, hence it does flicker. I see noticeable flicker on my plasma even with NTSC material at 60Hz. Surely at 24Hz, it would be unbearable?

Cheers

Flicker isn't the problem.

The problem is 3:2 pulldown, the process by which 24fps film is converted to 60Hz video, leading to judder on horizontal pans. We don't notice this problem on PAL DVDs or SDTV/HDTV broadcasts because 24fps sources are sped up to 25fps, so there is no judder when played back at 50Hz.

HD-DVD and Blu-ray movies are encoded at 24fps worldwide so if your display can't handle 24p you will get judder. 24p cinema modes available on a few new TVs avoid this problem.
