Is 2003 the year where dance regains its popularity?
Although some people on here will be quick to shoot me down for saying this, I think dance is now regaining its popularity.
This year the all these dance singles have done well: Divine Inpiration - The Way (Number 5 on the 12th of January) Panjabi MC - Mundian To Bach Ke (Number 5 on the 19th of January) Layo & Bushwacka - Finally (Number 8 on the 19th of January) Jurgen Vries - Brave New World (Number 3 on the 26th of January) Kira - I'll Be Your Angel (Number 9 on the 23rd of February) DJ Sammy - Boys Of Summer (Number 2 on the 2nd of March) Junior Senior - Move Your Feet (Number 3 on the 2nd of March) Vanuguard - Flash (Number 15 on the 23rd of March) Room 5 - Make Luv (Number 1 on the 30th of March for 4 weeks) Plummet - Damaged (Number 12 on the 20th of April) Tomcraft - Lonliness (Number 1 on the 4th of May) And theyre just a few, loads more have got into the top 20 and many more into the top 40. Is this the year that sees a turn around for dance? |

I think dance has lost out to the black stuff (esp r&b) we get these days.
After all, the dance radio and TV stations have been turne dinto black stations specialising in r&b. Therefore, songs which dont end up on the radio don't get bought and the profile of dance in the mainstream goes down. |

There wern't as many this time last year, only a few actually got into the Top 20 like Chemical Brothers, DB Boulevard, Lasgo and Flip & Fill.
This year is much better, so far... |

Two #1's already this year spending a total of 5 weeks at the top, a huge improvement on last year. Certain posters on this forum seem to think that dance is unpopular, but I think the public know otherwise. Even P Diddy is getting in on the act and Dancestar USA looked like a great event, so the future looks brighter in the States although the corrupt chaarts over there probably will hold things up.

By this time last year we had had the following Top 20 hits: Puretone - Addicted to Bass DJ Alligator Project - The Whistle Song Goldtrix - It's Love (Trippin') Lange - Drifting Away Flip & Fill featuring Kelly Llorenna - True Love Never Dies Dirt Devils - The Dril POD - Alive DB Boulevard - Point of View Lasgo - Something Shy FX - Shake Ur Body Faithless (ft. Dido) - One Step Too Far 1 Giant Leap - My Culture So no, I don't think 2003 has started off any more 'dancey' than previous years. And we're still getting lumped with just as many covers and dance bastardisations of once brilliant songs... joy en masse!! |

I mean, look at MTV Dance, playing P Diddy, B2K, JLo etc. They only do that becuase it's the 'thing' at the moment, and they want to cash in. Although the thing that I feel is not doing dance a lot of favours currently, is the amount of cheesy 80s covers, and european pop bands churning out mundane trance, because it's so bad, people remember it and then they think that's all that dance music is. Ah well, it will come round again one day.... |

Goldtrix - It's Love (Trippin') Again, so? Just because you don't remember them doesn't mean they weren't Top 20 hits. POD was a copy and pasting mistake, however the other three I'm sure you would recognise if you got hold of a copy of Now 52 or Hits 52 and had a listen.
Dirt Devils - The Dril POD - Alive Shy FX - Shake Ur Body I dont even remember these. |

A good dance tune can be just as enjoyable as a vicious Bob Dylan song, or any other song writer for that matter - fair enough if you dont like dance (I use to be the same) but it doesn't get the credit it deserves at times. |

I refer back to a comment I made in another thread,IF we all liked the same stuff i.e Music, celebrities, football teams this world would be boring. Dislike the music if you must but do`nt criticise others for their liking of it.

I didn't criticise anyone for liking it. I just outlined why I hate the crap and why I hope it doesnt get more popular this year.

To say a song is rubbish because it hasn't got lyrics is clearly foolish... but I would say a lot of the dance that gets into the charts is very derivative and soulless euro-crap. Same old cheesy drumbeat, same old over-used synthy noises, same old unoriginal female vocalist.
Proper dance music can be amazing, but the chart stuff usually isn't. |

I wasnt really asking anyone to evaluate my opinion, merely stating what I think. I presonally think its crap for the reasons I have said. I think those guys are pretty talentless, well compared to other genres anyway. To me, they're just churning out computer generated crap, under another stupid meaningless name, with another vocalist that sounds like all the other female dance vocalist, and who has most probably failed to break it in other genres so has to resort to singing simple lyrics on a dance song.
I'm not asking everyone to agree with me, its just my opinion and I'm entitled to give it on forums like this one. |

With regards to having talent and not - personally when I listen to music I tend to enjoy the song because of the way it makes me feel or because I like the way its layered etc. If the person doing it has talent then all the better, but its not essential for me. I use to think the other way round - however back then all I listened to was Indie and the occasional rock classic. I can enjoy pratically any genre as much as the next now. |

'The cheeky Girls' have a talent for doing light weight pop, and , so far, are successful at it. 'Las Ketchup' .whoever wrote that song, IMO, showed talent and originality. 2 songs that could be labelled 'talentless' by some, but have a certain 'something' which made them popular. even the most twee and simple pop song has to have something extra for it to succeed. |

What I dont class as talent though is when a band such as Westlife release a ballad that simply follows all the rules (ie. taking it up a key during the last chorus)... its music by numbers and that bugs me. But then you also find that in other genres. There are certain types of songs I like but then I hear so many songs that work the same way that I just dont pay any attention to the latest releases.
At least with bands such as Blur, Radiohead and Mansun (RIP) you know you are going to hear something that isn't by the numbers. |
