I'm new to Skype and so far Skype to Skype have found it very good... HOWEVER.....

I work outside Europe for a UK company and regularly have to join conference calls on 0800 numbers in the uk, but although I can use Skype out to call that 0800 no. for free, the whole thing falls over when I have to use the keypad to enter the conference number I want to join.

It's a known and unresolved problem apparently with the DTMF tones not being relayed properly (echos and gaps) so that the conferencing system cannot tell which conf to put you into....

does anyone know if there is a VOIP provider that can handle DTMF correctly, yet still give me the free access to the 0800 numbers ?

the lack of interest by Skype in resolving this is frustrating to say the least....

any ideas ?

PS tried a standalone dial pad for replicating DTMF but that didn't work across Skype either.

I use DTMF though Skype (using a Philips VOIP 841 phone) and SIP (using a Siemens Gigaset C450i phone through www.draytel.org) for joining phone conferences and struggling with the inevitable phone menu at almost any call centre.
No problems here, but maybe the Skype soft phone ehaves different.

IIRC a DTMF setting of "SIP INFO" is required. Well it is on my Draytek VoIP router. Don't know if you have such an option?

www.draytel.org 's my provider, too. No problems with them. 0800 numbers are indeed free.

I use Sipgate, VoIPTalk, OrbTalk, VoIPStunt and other Betamax services and all work with DTMF.

With DTMF set to "in band" for the Betamax services and "INFO" for the others.

This is using a PAP2 ATA.

Same settings work on X-Lite softphone and using the Betamax services own Softphone it just works.
