Video editing software.

I have burned a DVD from my HXD710 and want to extract just a small part (couple of minutes) of the recording such that I can e-mail it to people who can then watch it on their PC’s.

The manual says the recording from the 710 is MPEG video. Is that MPEG, MPEG1 or MPEG2?

Can anyone recommend some simple video editing software that will do this please? I’d prefer freeware or trailware as I don’t intend to do this kind of thing regularly.

Many thanks in advance.

Generally DVD/PVRs etc are Mpeg2.

I personally use the Pinnacle range of software, but I'm afraid it is not free.

An editor friend of mine recommends MPEG Streamclip. It's free from http://www.squared5.com

You can use it to rip the segment you want from the DVD and then export it to a new format. As you are only wanting to email the clip rather than burn it to DVD I'd suggest saving the new file in Divx (MPEG4) format. This is a highly compressed but good quality codec.

The recipients will need Divx playback software but I'm pretty sure the latest versions of Real Player and Windows Media Player support it.

If not they can just go here and download VideoLAN for free:

Good luck!

I use MPEG Streamclip, it works very well, but do download the manual if you want to use some of the less 'intuitive' features

My approach is:

Burn a RW DVD on the DVD/HDD recorder
Copy the VOB files from the DVD to the PC hard disk.
Use streamclip to trim/edit the video.
Use streamclip to export to m2v (video) and ac3 (audio) files.
Use DVDstyler (http://www.dvdstyler.de/ also free/shareware) to create menus, buttons etc.
Import the m2v and ac3 files into DVDstyler
Create an ISO image.
Use any DVD burn software (Nero, Roxio etc.) to copy the edited image to a new DVD.

DVD styler even lets you add your own subtitles in SRT form, even though it claims that it isn't supported yet...

Excellent advice, thank you. I hadn't heard of DVD Styler so I'll give it a go.
