Hi there ......

Just recently I have bought a Samsung HD 37" TV [I wanted a bigger one, but the room just wouldn't let me!! ] I am very happy with this purchase mainly to play my Xbox 360 which I connect via component output and I'm impressed with the quality of the picture. I now have heard of a new Xbox360 model available soon which supports HDMI as well as a 120GB hard drive called 'The Xbox Elite'.

Would anybody please be able to tell me whether or not it would be worth investing in the Elite? I don't need the hard drive capacity as such but would the HDMI be supported using a 1080i TV as I have discovered that the TV that I have bought does not support 1080p.

Can anybody clear this up for me since I will not be replacing the TV for a while?

Many thanx for your time and thank you in advance ......

The best picture you can get on your TV is using the VGA cable. You can set the resolution to the native resolution of your screen - 1366x768. Wheras, the elite 360 only allows you to set 720p or 1080i (same as component), neither of which are correct.

If you had a 1080P TV, then the elite is probably a better choice than a normal 360, because although component can do 1080P aswell, HDMI's got higher bandwidth.

The elite 360 may also be necessary if you own the 360 HD-DVD drive, in the future HD-DVD releases could use the ICT (Image constraint token) which disables all non-digital outputs (so they wouldent play on a non-elite 360), although they dont use it at the moment and they might not ever..

The only reason I can see for buying an elite is if you own a 1080P TV or for the higher storage space, but the first point is hard to justify.

Well seeing as Microsoft do not belong to the Blu-Ray Disc Association there is no way a Microsoft-branded Blu-Ray player add-on could be manufactured. That said, nothing stopping Microsoft becoming "friendly" with another manufacturer to bring about a tie-in, but as I said it's very doubtful.

Not sure with the 32", but I just got a 26" and it says in the manual the 'optimium' is 720p and the maximum resolution is 1080i. The screen is 768 so I guess the 1080i signal is downscaled to 768 lines and the 720p is either left alone or upscaled slightly.
I think it can also depend on the type of thing you are watching, I have read somewhere than interlaced is better for fast moving stuff as the image refreshes more often, but I have also read that it is worse as you can get slightly stepped images due to an object having moved in between the half frames.
