Sky Talk
Hey
So we have BT and want to change to Sky Talk (£5 package) Do we still need a BT package? or can we cancel BT and get Sky Talk? If you still need a BT package, what is the cheapest we can get? |

If by package you mean line rental, then yes, you still require a BT line rental.
Cheapest is OPTION 1, a little over £10 if paid by direct debit, and you go paper free. The cheapest BT residential line rental package is BT Together Option 1 which costs £11/month - but it's £1.50/month more if you don't pay by DD or 50p less if do and you opt for paper-free billing too. Hence, you can get it for £10.50/month. For £5 extra per month, Sky Talk Unlimited is excellent value for UK 01/02 calls and international calls to the ten specified countries BUT Sky's charges for other types of calls (084x, 087x etc) are uncompetitive. Have you considered getting an Orchid dialler as well? HERE are some suggestions for programming if you have (or just some things to consider). Don't forget though that, if you have 'free' Caller Display and/or 1571, you'll need to make 2 chargeable calls per month via BT (if you're billed monthly) or 6 calls per quarter (if you're billed quarterly) of else BT will charge you for those services. The cheapest way to do that is to use the 1280 prefix to 'hop back onto BT' to make 2 (or 6) evening or weekend UK 01/02 calls of less than an hour. They'll cost 5½p each at the moment (4½p from 1/8/07). |

Sky Talk is a CPS (Carrier PreSelect) calls package and, as such, you have to keep a BT landline - and pay rental for it.

Were deffo going to skytalk.. How much is the BT Security services if you dont make the calls?
BT charges £1.75/month (£5.25/quarter) - which is why it's worthwhile making 27p worth of calls with the 1280 prefix. If you must use 1571 too, BT will charge you £3 per quarter for that if you don't make those calls (but the same 2 - or 6 - calls will negate the charge for Caller Display and 1571). My 'I can't forget' workaround is to program the number of my local Indian takeaway (which doesn't open until 6pm) with the 1280 prefix into one of my DECT handsets. That way I am certain I'll make the necessary 6 calls in the 13 week period! |

I think you mean BT Privacy (which is really nothing more than Caller Display).

Good idea!
Do you have to make a min call length or could 1 min be enough? My DECT handsets have a call timer so I know it takes me just under a minute to order a meal for the GL and me on a Friday night! |

But gettin sky BroadBand! Look at Primus Saver 2. For no monthly fee you get evening and weekend calls for free (01 / 02 numbers each up to 90mins). Then look at Call 18185, daytime calls at 5p for the entire call (evening and weekends too, but you can get them free). Calls to mobiles on 18185 are much cheaper too. Primus: www.planet-talk.co.uk/saver/ Call18185: www.call18185.co.uk Though if you thought you wouldn't be saving much, then that means you rarely use your phone, so was surprised you were looking at the £5 service from Sky. |
