Good news for Sipgate customers. They are planning to introduce access to emergency service over the 'coming months' according to Help Centre staff.

I would say this will work on a similar basis as VOIPFone offer right now, which is to give access and you will be able to register your details on a national emergency service database (optional but highly advisable). All VOIP providers can also provide IP details to the authorities in case of abuse and hoax calls.

Sadly I've had an email this week to say the person at Sipgate who told me this information was wrong, and they have no plans to introduce this after all.

It's a shame since Sipgate is such a good provider yet is becoming the minority not to provide any access to emergency services at all.

I really don't beleive that 112 (999) access from VOIP lines is a big issue. How many people who are savvy enough to have VOIP do not have a mobile? I know which I would reach for in an emergency Also, apart from a very few people most VOIP subscribers are running over an ADSL line which also supports voice to 112.

Emergency access is a growing issue though, with more and more people adopting the technology.

I'd be interested to see the source of your information that 'most' VOIP users have ADSL, or is that just your opinion? I'm aware globally that DSL installations outnumber cable broadband installations, but the millions of cable installations are hardly what I would call 'very few people' as you put it.

I do, I rely on that for 999 calls.

I have 999 on VoIP sent to West Midlands police, but this is just for non-emergency police calls.
