The Verve getting back together
Thats it really, recording a new album and touring at the end of the year.

Why did they split in the first place - was it the usual personal/musical differences (ie hate each other)?

With a few more millions in the bank, needless to say. I blame Take That for all these bloody re-unions. If their return had sunk without trace, no-one else would have been tempted. |

They are all in it for the money at the end of the day.
Ashcroft's desperately mediocre solo albums probably swung it for him too. |

They split upto due to the pressure of non stop touring on the back of Urban Hymns and getting sick of each other. Ashcroft is by all accounts not the easiest person to get along with. Good to see them back though. Urban Hymns was one of the better albums that came out during that period of mass Indie bands. Its not like summat like Cast getting back together. They were a big band in their day who never followed up their best and most successful work.

Ashcroft's desperately mediocre solo albums probably swung it for him too. They had disagreements about their musical direction and a clash of personalities - but that tension was maybe the key to their creativity. I'd really like them to go back to the early stuff Northern Soul/Storm in Summer. Ashcroft has been rehashing Lucky Man for the last ten years. |

If they get back together it doesn't necessarily mean they'll make a brilliant album. There's only about 2 tracks on Urban Hymns that aren't totally Ashcroft. He's not suddenly going to become a songwriting god. I still don't get the major fuss about Urban Hymns. It's just that everyone owns it because of the hype and the Bittersweet Symphony video. Richard's solo albums are pretty decent.

Urban Hymns was just one of the better albums that came out at the time. After Oasis released 'Whats the story' and Britpop was at its height, there was some seriously average and medicore albums being released. Cast(their second one), OCS(never a fan), the Seahorses, Pulp(this is hardcore) and Space all released albums around this point. 'Be Here Now' went it came was also disappointing.
The Roses had disbanded and I think the Manics comeback album was also not to hot(could be wrong on that one). Urban Hymns just took advantage of that lull in musical creativity. The Stereophonics debut album was probably lauded for similar reasons. Being a half decent album surrounded by mediocrity. |

I'm not over-keen on Urban Hymns either but did buy it recently in a sale. Few good tracks and that's it. |

The Verve's reunion comes weak in comparison to Weezer's announcement on new album.
I'm more excited on the latter. |

Does anyone remember The Shining which came out of the Verve (Jones and Tong), they released a single 'Quicksilver' which I still think sounds brilliant and as good if not better than anything I ever heard the Verve do. there was also all that fuss over the name when Verve records sued them

I've never really been a big fan. When I told people in work they treated me like Hitler LOL. Then again one of the people said Nirvana where not that good. I was then carted off to hospital suffering from an embolism
