Got the idea for this thread from a question asked in Chatter.

Are there any songs that the lyrics are really poignent or meaningful to you or really get you choked up?

For me, theres a few but the one the one that springs to mind at the moment is Lets Stay Together by Al Green. The lyrics of this song are basically wedding vows and its one song that always makes me get goosebumps when I hear it.

Abba 'The winner takes it all'

I first heard this song in 1980, just after my fiancee of the time had dumped me for someone else.
I still get a lump in my throat every time I hear this song, especially the line.
'The gods may throw the dice, their minds as cold as ice, and someone way down here, loses someone dear'.

still get shivers just typing it!!.

Phil Collins - Separate Lives - this bit -

You have no right to ask me how I feel
You have no right to speak to me so kind
We can't go on, holding on to time
Now that we're living separate lives

Well I have learnt to let you go
And if you lost your love for me,
You never let it show, oh no
There was no way to compromise
So now we're living
Now we're living separate lives

Ooh, it's so difficult, love leads to isolation
So you build that wall - you build that wall
Yes you build that wall - oh yes, you build that wall
And you make it stronger - no

It still makes me sob after almost 4 years since splitting with my partner, knowing that I made the biggest mistake of my life letting him go. He's been with someone else for 2 years, and it still hurts like hell. We are still in touch, and good friends which makes it worse I think than a clean break, but I don't want to forget him or the good times we had.

Thanks a bunch Charleah, just made myself cry again!

Two songs for me, both recent. Shiver by Coldplay up first, with:

And it's you I see
But you don't see me
And it's you I hear
So loud and so clear
I sing it loud and clear
And I'll always be waiting for you

And Cautioners by Jimmy Eat World:

You'll change your mind come Monday
And turn your back on me
You'll take your steps away from me with hesitence
You'll take your steps away from me

As is quite obvious I have a big case of unrequieted love going on. In September a girl who I really really fancied but didn't want to tell for fear of wreaking our existing friendship found out I fancied her and I've hardly spoken to her since. What makes Cautioners even more poignant for me is that she found out on a Monday too

I think "lose yourself" for me as well. I can't think of any others apart from that

Guess which song i'm having for the first dance at my wedding this summer?

Amazing song.

Apart from that, how about these for poignant lyrics?

Agadoo, do, do
Push pineapples, shake a tree
Agadoo, do, do
Push pineapples, grind coffee

*wow*.

And there I was thinking I was the only one who'd had that idea!

A few lyrics that give me goosebumps:

"It's over now
I know it's over now
But I can't
Let
Go"

From A Late Night Train by The Blue Nile

"It's the stupid details that my heart is breaking for
It's the way your shoulders shake and what they're shaking for
I want you
It's knowing that he knows you now after only guessing
It's the thought of him undressing you or you undressing
I want you"

I Want You by Elvis Costello

"Drying up in conversation,
You'll be the one who cannot talk
All your insides fall to pieces,
You just sit there wishing you could still make love"

High and Dry by Radiohead

"Father, father,
We don't have to escalate..."

What's Going On by Marvin Gaye

"Should a love be tender, and bleed out loud?
Or be tougher than tough, and prouder than proud.
If I'm troubled by every folding of your skirt,
am I guilty of every male-inflicted hurt?"

Cruel by Prefab Sprout

"Every inch of my skin is crying for your hands"

Soon After Christmas by Stina Nordenstam

And many more.

Stuck with you - Huey Lewis and the News (This bit)

We've had some fun
Yes we've had our ups and downs
Been down that rocky road
But here we are still around
We thought about someone else
But neither one took the bair
We thought about breaking up
Now we know it's much too late
We are cound by all the rest
Like the same phone number
All the same friends and the same address

OOH yes it's true (yes it's true)
I am happy to be stuck with you
Ooh yes it's true (yes it's true)
I'm so happy to be stuck with you
ooh 'cause I can see (I can see)
That you're happy to be stuck with me

There's a couple for me (sorry for barging into your thread!):

First from James, Sit Down

'If I hadn't seen such riches I could live with being poor'

Always reminds me of student days and how I would cope now.

Secondly, Something Changed by Pulp:

'I wrote this song two hours before we met,
I didn't know your name or what you looked like yet,
I could have stayed at home and gone to bed,
I could have gone to see a film instead,
You might have changed your mind and seen your friends,
Life could have been very different but then,
something changed.

Do you believe that there's someone up above?
And does he have a timetable, directing acts of love?
Why did I write this song on that one day?
Why did you touch my hand and softly say,
"Stop asking questions that don't matter anyway,
Just give us a kiss to celebrate here today,
something changed?"

When we woke up that morning we had no way of knowing,
that in a matter of hours we change the way we were going,
Oh, where would I be now?
Where would I be now if we never met?
Would I be singing this song to someone else instead?
I don't know, but like you just said,
something changed.

Makes me tingle everytime!

the Jarvis Cocker lyric i like is, i forget the name of the song but the lyric goes....

'and I could be a genius,if i could put my mind to it'
and i,i could do anything,if only i could get round to it.'

being a lazy sod it seems quite personal, although maybe genius is stronging it a bit.

two more from Jarvis -

'Joyriders'

'we can't help it we're so thick we can't think,
can't think of anything but sh*t, sleep and drink,
and we like women, up the women we say,
and if we get lucky yeah we might even meet some one day'

also

'Babies'
'we were on the bed when you came home,
i heard you stop outside the door,
I know you wont believe it's true,
I only went with her cos she looks like you'

nice from Jarvis

how about the all time classic

'y'see i spy for a living and i specialise in revenge,on taking the things i know will cause you pain,i can't help it i was dragged up,my favourite parks are car parks, grass is something you smoke, birds are something you shag, take your year in provence and shove it up your arse. '

Not often you see a David Sneddon lyric quoted on DS!

i always thought this was a great verse, from tori amos :

*so you found a guy who thinks really deep thoughts
whats so amazing about really deep thoughts?
boy you'd best hope that I bleed real soon.
how's that thought for ya?*

from *silent all these years*

also like

*up down turn around
please don't let me hit the ground
tonight i think i'll walk alone
i'll find my soul as I go home*

new order *temptation*

for sheer silliness, this from half man half biscuit :

*they're cooking on blue peter now
they're sampling the dishes
i don't normally like tomatoes John
but this is delicious!*
