Deano despreatly wants a mum,but keeps being let down. Carly just cant trust her and wont allow herself to be drawn in. Should they give Shirley a chance ??

Well Dean has always wanted a mum type figure...and he has given her loads of chances already...im not sure really. I think they should be civil with her but not sort of take her word for anything and trust her as much as you would with a parent.

I agree with you. To be honest every time she gets a chance she messes it up. Although i don't really see why Pat should try and stop Deano, it is there choice.

There is no doubt she's got no mothering skills at all...but she isn't a vile person she's just a bit of a slapper. She's not gonna turn into mother of the year, they should just accept this is the way she is and get on with their lives..they are adults now.

I think they have to. Deano wont be happy till he does have a relationship with Shirley but he has to wake up and realise she isnt capable of being the kind of mum he wants. carly needs to talk about how she felt as a 5 year old being left and get alot of stuff off he chest with her Mum and accept some mothering if Shirley is able to supply it

Shirley is a great piece of casting (for once) by EE. She not only acts the part but looks like a flint-hearted, me me me first type.

She's Deano and Carly's mother but she can never be their 'mum'.

Carly went to her last week or something for info, and all looked good, the conversation was cival and happy, till carly realised she was lying, and bam, that probaby just reinforced to her, she cant trust her, or rely on her because she always lets you down. Dean the same. Shirley keeps making mistakes, you can tell she loves them, but she's let them down big time, of course they are going to be resentful of her. any child who's mother leaves when you are young and abandons you for 17 odd years while you grow up is going to be very angry and resentful. the strong unconditional bond children have with their parents, isnt there with carly because she hasnt brought her up or been in her life. she hasnt been a 'mother' to them in any sense of the word.

she needs to make small steps, and gain their trust gradually, because i do think they want a relationship with her underneath it all, deano deff.. and maybe they can have a cival relationship with her, but one suspects shirley will keep screwing up, she's just a character that you cant really trust because you always get let down in the end.

Yes they should in my opinion. They should all move on from the past and Carly and Deano should get to know their mum whilst they still can - they now have an opportunity to get to know Shirley very well now and they shouldn't let that opportunity slip away.

shirley has never had kids so she doesnt know how to treat them and how their minds work.
She has been alone for like the past 17 years so in that time she has become very selfish. I deff think she should work harder and stick to what she says to Dean and carly. And Dean should make up his own mind about her...not take Carly's word for it like last time

I don't agree. They've given her chances but she just can't resist causing trouble for them. She should realise that, because she's been out of their lives for so long, they won't appreciate her interference. They might have been babies when she left, but they're adults now and capable of making their own decisions - whether right or wrong.

If she truly cared for them she wouldn't want to make them unhappy but, not only can't she seem to help herself, she also seems to get pleasure from it!

I think she's turned up now for all the wrong reasons - namely: she's suddenly getting too old to be the good time girl and realises once she loses her ability to 'pick-up' the men, she'll end up on her own.

That's why she wants her family around her, selfishness, not because she cares about them.
