Hello,

I used to have my landline and broadband through BT, and enjoyed several trouble free years with them. I moved house in 2005, but as the house did not have a BT line, they wanted about £100 to install a line, which I refuesed, so I opted to go with NTL, which was already connected.

Since the switch to Virgin, I have had nothing but trouble, and the final straw has arrived in the post this morning, as I have been overcharged (again) by about £40 this month.

My question is this, are there any other companies I can go to for my phone and broadband, without having to pay ridiculous installation costs. I refuse to pay BT over £100 as I was a good customer of theres for years, but I don't know if there are any other suppliers that I can use.

That may have been Freudian!

I, too, have had many years of exemplary service from BT and, although the enforced arrival of Openreach (Ofcom's idea of how to level the playing field for the plethora of line 'providers' [most are just re-sellers] now in the market) has resulted in BT's price for new line provision now being £124.99, I'd still recommend you take the longer-term view and go for that option.

Why?

Well, BT is the only line provider required to allow subscribers access to all other calls providers so you could, and I and many others do, rent a BT landline but only make the necessary 33p-worth (to be 27p-worth from 1/8/07) of calls via BT each quarter to qualify for 'nearly free' Caller Display and 1571.

Similarly, subscribers are free to choose whichever ADSL broadband provider they like despite the fact that it will be carried on the BT landline (as it happens, I live in a small village and take the coward's option and go for BT Total broadband too).

I expect you've seen my '7 steps' set of suggestions/recommendations for voice telephony money-saving before but, in case you haven't, HERE YOU GO.

Thanks Heinz, you have confirmed what I thought.

After spending an hour on hold to Virgin, only to be put through to the wrong department I have cancelled all my Virgin services, and have ordered a BT line!

Is it just me or did NTL go completely down the pan when Virgin took over? I have never experienced such bad service from a company, and this is the first time I have ever cancelled something in anger

You could be right - despite the promises.

Hehe,

It wasn't just me then!

In a fit of anger, I phoned the bank after slamming the phone down to Virgin and cancelled my direct debit! In retrospect, this seems like a good idea, because now I have a chance of speaking to someone in authority when they phone me to chase payment, rather than some numpty who will just put me on hold for another hour.

MR BRANSON, I HOPE YOU'RE READING THIS.

Unfortunately, I think they just slap a non-payment charge on and hand the account to debt collectors.
