Cheapest way to get satnav?
ZedZed
28-06-2007
Hi all,

What's the cheapest way to get satnav?

I'm thinking it's possibly buying:
(1) a GPS recevier
(2) 2nd hand PDA (from ebay?),
(3) Getting "map data/software"

Has anyone done this and did it work out cheaper than spending £100+ on a dedicated satnav unit?

Cheers,

Dez

Sony Ericsson K800i
Bluetooth GPS Reciver
Nav4All

I think my GPS cost £50 in total - the main problem is it is too quiet and occasionally some junctions are missed (if you assume to go in the direction with most lanes your okay though), even recalculates on the fly.

Is it better than a dedicated Satnav - I'd say not.

Is it useful for when you need it once in a blue moon - certainly.
Harry, it sucks

Nokia 6680 (GF's old phone) - Free
BT GPS receiver - £32
TomTom Mobile 5 + GB & Oz maps - Free
the software is a bit out of date, and the phone is not supported anymore, so its not as good as a £150 dedicated sat nav jobby. But as Kev says, the receiver sits in my glovebox and i only use it occasionally, so for £30 its fine.
If you want to do it properly it's probably not cheaper unless you already have the PDA.

I just bought a TomTom ONE from Amazon. Am I crazy? Yesterday it took me three miles down a dead-end road with a gate across it.
