My Philips DVDR610 recorder has all of a sudden decided not to read / see any disk I put in including commercial ones so I presume the laser has packed up ? Would a DVD cleaner help ? I have tried a reset etc but no change. Time to bin it I guess ? No I'm not paying Philips £81 for a fix either !

Unfortunately all Philips dvd recorders go this way eventually.

The initial sub £500 machines the 880 was a disaster and every single unit was fitted with a dodgy laser.

If I remember the ranges in correct order ,yours was from the second range after the 880.

Forum postings across the net showed that little had changed with these except Philips did seem to make them last a bit longer before this happened.

Best bet is to go and get a proper recorder like Pioneer or Panasonic and enjoy quality at last.

If you get one with HDD too you'll love it

Yep I know about all the problems but up until this week mine has been fine apart from the odd glitch. Shame because the Philips IMO is one of the most user freindly and looks good too. I'll probablty buy one off ebay. I use sky plus anyway so only use it when I want to copy something to a DVD
