Can anyone remember this, when it was and what the main story in the episode was.

I can only remember all the characters on the cobbles at the end but nothing else.

It was on 9th December 2000 to mark the 40th anniversary of the programme. The first episode went out live on 8th December 1960. Bill Roche who plays Ken Barlow was in both of those episodes. There was a story about plans to take up the street's famous cobbles and at the end they found out the residents campaign to save them had been successful. Prince Charles made a guest appearance and Peter Barlow made his debut. A huge audience tuned in many probably to see all the mistakes the actors would make without the luxury of retakes and edits but it was an almost a flawless production.

It was very well done. The only "mistakes" I can recall were Audrey stumbling over some lines (but she got there in the end), and Dev making a premature entrance to The Kabin and having to "hover" in the background - it reminded me of Mrs Overall in "Acorn Antiques"!

You're right though, and also it's worth pointing out that the live episode was shown on the 8th of December 2000.
