100Hz - Does it matter?
I'm in the market for a new 37 or 32" telly & I'm prepared to spend a reasonable sum (up to 800ish), so I've had my head turned by the Panasonic px70.
My last purchase was a 100hz Sony CRT & I love the fact that there is no flicker as a result. Whenever I watch a 50hz telly now, the flicker irritates my eyes. My question is: Is this issue of 50 / 100hz still applicable or relevant to a plasma? Does it only matter on CRTs? The px70s are 50hz I believe & that's just stopping me from taking the plunge at the moment. Also, if there's another plasma I should be considering, please let me know - I'm a bit of Panasonic fan, but I could the swayed! |

LCD and Plasma aren't scanned like CRT's, so it doesn't really apply - try taking a photo of one, you don't get the huge black horizontal bands like you do with a CRT.

If you could go as high as £1150 then I would seriously recommend this Pioneer:
http://www.comet.co.uk/cometbrowse/p....do?sku=352225 I have the 6th generation version (this is the 7th generation version) that cost me £2,800 12 months ago and this TV just amazes me every time I put it on! If you want to ask anything more specific about the TV, just let me know! |

I'd certainly consider paying more for a belter of a telly, but I think 42" would just be too big - it's not a huge room (13'x15') and I don't want to overwhelm it. That's why I'm wavering between 32 & 37". Pioneer don't do a 37" version of that do they? |

Well, I'm certain I can still perceive flicker on plasma - I'm like you I'm very sensitive to flicker and need a 100Hz TV. Best thing to do is to go into a shop and compare them side by side. Like CRT, you'll probably see the flicker best out of the corner of your eye when you're not directly looking at it. If plasma isn't scanned, then I don't know why this occurs but I can definitely tell the difference between plasma and LCD. Perhaps it's like flourescent lights?

Plasma is different from LCD, because Plasma pixels can only be ON or OFF, their brightness can't be varied. In order to give variable brightness each individual picture is displayed 256 times - with the pixels being ON or OFF varying amounts. So for a half brightness pixel it would only be ON 128 of the 256 times it's displayed. This is why Plasma's radiate LOT'S of interference, there's a great deal going on!. |

I'm suprised it works at all actually!
So, theorising for a moment, I suppose it's possible that certain levels of brightness could in fact result in a slow enough flicker to be perceivable? |

it will be 120hz in the new 1080p panels coming soon
a 100hz 37'' sharp was £699.99 last week on empiredirect http://www.empiredirect.co.uk/conten...A-LC37RD2E.htm seems the price went up due to demand, a 10% discount voucher (which is going the rounds in a av forum thread) and linking to empiredirect through quidco for a further 2% discount, was bringing that low price (including delivery) down to around £650 |
