160kbps AAC - Comparison to Mp3
Kargo

Hi, just a quick question.

what roughly is the difference in bit rate of a 160kbps AAC to mp3? (ie. what bit rate mp3 is it equal too)

It really depends on what your preferences are. Some people think MP3 (particularly with encoders such as LAME) is better quality, whilst others prefer AAC. From what I understand, AAC should technically be better. 160kbps should probably sound the same as 192kbps MP3.

I find an 128mbps AAC file is as good (or better) than a 192mbps MP3 file.

I find anything over 128mbps on AAC you can't tell any diffrence (MP3 you need to set a lot higher).

I've always gone for the AAC format as it's always sounded better at a lower sample rate (a lot less space used up on the iPod).

To me a 128k AAC sounds better than a 192k MP3. AAC is a seriously impressive format. Im not sure you could do an exact bitrate comparison though.
