I remember Laura's parents coming to meet Ian and not being very impressed.
Laura's mum Edwina Dunn was originally played by Hannah Waterman's (Laura) real life mother, Patricia Maynard.
Anyway I really enjoyed that episode - thought the scenes with Stella's parents were really good and very interesting. I'm quite surprised that others found it dull. Compared to the rest of the week and last week especially it had a bit of a slower pace but in general I thought it was still very enjoyable. Even when nothing much is happening like last night I am still entertained by the show and that's the way it should be.

The only reason I can give for that is that the characterisation feels much tighter so therefore it's safe to invest in the characters again and EE have some great characters (mostly female) at the moment. I don't think there's a problem with the writing either and tbh I don't think there has been for quite some time now.
Kate H did get a tad sloppy towards the end of her reign but the new guy has brought things back on course again and is doing a great job.
We learnt more about Stella's character last night so that storyline moved forward, I thought people would have relished those scenes like I did. Fair enough the excruciating Li and Shirley's smelly armpits didn't make for the best TV but they're not enough to drag an episode down for me.
I remember in 2004 when EE was terrible to watch especially when nothing much happened but now the quiet episodes are actually decent. The scripts and characterisation are a lot better compared to that era.
