Music and DVD retailer Fopp is the latest high street chain to slip into administration this afternoon, closing its 81 stores across the country.

Shame, they were always great for cheap £5 albums and dvds... plus their dvd boxsets were always good for offers...

That is a real shame. You could always get a few bargains and obscure titles from there.

Damn shame, I bought some great classic albums and films at Fopp. It was one of my all time favourite music stores.

Well if people keep spending so much money on downloading stuff off the net (that can easily be lost or destroyed) then high street record shops will close down more often. Personally, I like to own something when I buy songs or albums, not just have the tracks I bought somewhere hidden on my pc. You just don't own anything by downloading. Seems such a waste of money to me.

I have never seen a Fopp shop, never heard of them and never even seen any adverts. Did they have any shops in London?

They had a great store in Tottenham Court Road which had a café where you could get a beer and watch live bands. Also stores in Covent Garden and various other London branches including the much-missed (and it's only just closed) Chiswick branch.

I must go around with my eyes closed! I used to be in Tot Court Road almost every day and never once seen a Fopp.

There was a Fopp in the Overgate in Dundee and I went there a few times. They were really good and I went there along with virgin Megastores.

There were quite a few stores around the country. They had a wider range than HMV and often at better prices as well.

It's no wonder they went under judging by the amount of people on here who haven't even heard of them (including me)!!

A few things:

1. They're not in administration, they're in 'close conversation' with their bank, but all their shops have closed, at least temporarily.

2. For those who haven't heard of Fopp, they also owned Music Zone (which is what most MVCs turned into).

3. They haven't run into problems because of poor sales, in fact all their shops were doing well. The trouble seems to be that they've bought too many premises, including Music Zone, and were spreading themselves too thinly. Stock has been drying up for a while, particularly new releases, because they haven't been able to get enough releases from distributors to cover all their premises.

Great shop, I really hope they manage to sort something out. If not, their premises and stock must be very attractive to a new buyer, so a good music shop (or 3) should arise from Fopp's rubble.

According to Publishing News :

FOPP HAS CLOSED down its 46 stores following a turbulent week including an emergency day-long stock take and the prevention of credit card payments in its stores and on its website. A formal statement issued on Friday lunchtime read: "It is with great regret that we announce the closure of Fopp. Our chain is profitable, well regarded and loved by our loyal customers and staff. However we have failed to gain the necessary support from major stakeholders, suppliers and their credit insurers to generate sufficient working capital to run our expanding business. We would like to thank staff and customers for their support over the past 25 years." Ernst & Young is expected to be announced as the official adminstrator for the business.

That's a shame - I love looking round the Tott Ct Road branch on my lunch breaks. I bought some great bargain DVD's from there.
