Lily Allen - why is she so popular?
Just seen her performing on the Friday Night Project and she can't sing to save herself.
I know quite a few pop peeps don't have great voices, e.g., Britney, but at least she performs. L.A just stands there talking ... woops, I mean singing. So, why is this chick so popular? |

My objection with her is not her voice or even her unpleasant character, I just don't think her songs are very good. For me, that's a more fundamental problem really, lol.

She is so popular because she is always doing stuff to get in the papers. Everyday I open my paper on a work break, she is in it!

Lily's music is not my usual taste at all. But, I got hold of her album recently and I like it. Plus, she was great at Glastonbury. Love her, and her attitude.

Because it's chart music tinged with 5% 'street'
Makes people think she's edgy |

Does she actually write her own music by the way? (music not lyrics)

I don't think she's as popular with the public as she seems to be with the media, she hasn't exactly set the world alight has she? after all the excessive hype and promo, she's had one decent selling song out of 4 single releases and her album has managed 2x platinum after a year on sale.

I would have to agree with what Cheryl Tweedy said about her on The F Word...
"Chick with a dick" And not particularly talented in the singing department either, although I have to say I think I actually prefer her version of that Keiser Chiefs song that she's done to the original. Dave |

I've often wondered this question myself. After all why are people such fans of such a fake? She sings like a working class cockney when in fact she's very middle class and she drops the mockney accent for interviews. I really can't stand it when singers put on accents because they think it'll make them sound more 'cool' or 'street'.
Nothing really wrong with being a fake of course just as long as she's exposed for being fake wherever possible. Nice knockers btw. Oh and she's got to do something about that crap fringe. What's she hiding under it? Another accent? |

Aside from all the crap she spouts about other artists, she really isn't that good.
There are few worse things I could think of than having to sit through an entire album of Lily Allen and her Mockney accent. |

Her album "Alright Still" was the worst album I bought in 2006. Apart from (what became) the 4 singles the rest of the album was crap.
Also she was very lucky with her timing as her album was released before the fantastic return of Amy Winehouse & the fabulous Kate Nash who is the real deal not a "fake mockney" who went to one of the five costliest public schools in the country (the same school that Prince Charles went to!). The only reason she became famous is because of her family's connections within the British media with her mum (Alison Owen), the UK's top female film producer (Elizabeth, Sylvia, Shaun of the Dead and Proof & currently producing Brideshead Revisited; her dad hellraising actor, documentary presenter/producer & writer Keith Allen and her other "dad" when growing up Harry "he used to be funny in the 1980s/90s but is not anymore" Enfield. To be fair to her after watching the Friday Night Project, she came across well as a host, was excellent with her acting parodies in the sketches (especially as Amy Winehouse & Davina McCall) but was shocking with her singing at the end "Oh My God" was awful. Not since Billie Piper had a pop career has it been so blatantly obvious that a "star" is doing the wrong job.... |

From what I've heard of her songs she doesn't sing, she just talks over a backing track.

Why do they all do that? The faux-American accent is especially annoying.

I like what I've heard of her music - catchy tunes with fun lyrics. I love music with spoken/half spoken words and I love it when people sing about little everyday things eg "there was a little old lady who was walking down the road.."
What I don't like is the way she feels she has to have this "attitude" thing, that always looks really fake to me. It's a shame because otherwise, I really like her music. |
