Plus they wouldn't have the Tardis responsible for a disaster like the sinking of the Titanic

Naaaah, 100% not the Titanic.

Sorry if I'm repeating points already made, not had chance to read entire thread.

Cover up by TW - they made up the story about the iceberg because of what had happened (will happen?) in VotD

Maybe it's a bit like 'Moffat's Ghost' or something. Starts with a quick message from John Simm saying muah hah hah if you haven't heard from me by next Tuesday I'm going to [INSERT RANDOM TECHNICAL EXPLANATION FOR THE CRASH]. Except because they wouldn't want to disrespect the dead of the real Titanic, it will turn out not to be the Titanic but the ancient mothership of the Kromborox Race of Tharg (or something) who happen to have a thing for Edwardian ship design and trashing Type 40s. Kylie will however have been kidnapped off the real Titanic and will be rescued by DT who spends the entire episode dodging the back of what looks like CE's head in a Back to the Future type pastiche. Masses of people will watch, masses of people will complain on DS about the script and I will love it and then go and get drunk. Nuff said.

Well if the ship is the real titanic the props department need to do some more research. The life ring the doctor picks up is a dirty orange colour whereas the life-rings on the titanic were white www.titaniccollector.com/.../images/a_2_5_sm.jpg

The ship looked too small(from what was visible) and the angle of the bow was to steep

oh and the colour scheme looked off. They got the white top and yellow stripe right but underneath it looked a dark rusty red colour. The real titanic was black down to the water line and a dark red underneath.

I think its got to be a real ship (as opposed to a spaceship) as otherwise why have life-rings.... unless its a theme space ship...

About a year ago on the news, I heard about a replica of the Titanic being built by a company, to be sailed around the 100year anniversary of the disaster in April 2012. I wonder if the plot of VOTD could be around this premise. Perhaps some rich megalomaniac is behind this scheme in the story and wants to make the trip as authentic as possible. This person could be under the control of the Ice Warriors or another enemy.

nice one mike, i think you have hit the nail on the head, as it is a replica wont be to the same scale as the original, cost too much, so that would explain the scale of things as to the crash.

Thank you Mr Saxon..... I am not obsessive just observant. Something about what I saw didn't add up and 10 minutes research validated my gut feeling.
The series though fiction has usually been pretty accurate of late when the doctor delves into the past.

Therefore either the props department dropped the ball or its a subtle hint that this titanic is not the original 1912 ship.

Someone pointed out that a White star-Cunard* line sticker appeared briefly on a folder the guy in 'Blink' had, perhaps this would tie in nicely with the replica ship plot line mikevaughan suggested.

*(white star owned the titanic and were bought up by Cunard for you non-obsessives )

The Titanic is not an ancient legend, a fictional story or something funny. It is a grave that belongs to over a thousand people who suffered the most appalling deaths.

If RTD serves up a story that involves The Doctor or an enemy race being shown to affect the outcome of this terrible and tragic REAL event then I personally would find it offensive.

Hopefully, the version of the Titanic actually featured will be something different altogether...

I can but hope...

(And for the record - I don't have any direct relations that were involved, but I am aware that many families do)”

yes i had a great great grandmother who survived the disaster but her husband did not, yes some may find it offensive but you normally find those that do have no direct link to the tragic events of 1912, i do and i can't see how anyone can be offended by the possibility of the titanic in dr who, many films have been done about various real world events i.e world trade centre, ww1 and 2 ect yet no one complains, we can't live for the past we move on and live for the future, as my granny said of the titanic film of the 50's, nothing will bring her dad back but people have survived worse and after all its a story that will be told be it thru fiction, fantasy or true life, her words not mine.

its time to wait and enjoy a good story to come and for the obsessives to live a little bit

Is this true? Could this be a pointer to the next companion (remember that look between DW and Sally Sparrow's bf). Could Catherine Tate just be a very, very, very, very, very bad joke (well, yes, she is but you now what I mean)?

Do not no if it has been mentioned but in our local paper Manchester evening news that Kylie Minogue will be in the Christmas special as a main part but not said who it would be she be playing

As this is a speculation thread im gonna go for it.....

Well we now know that Donna Noble (Caterine Tate) is back and apparently for all 13 episodes so she might appear in this too (or would that be too much?).
If she does return for the xmas episode then it would have to be set after the events of TRB. Perhaps if this is a replica ship she and Lance were set to have their honeymoon as a cruise and she thought why waste the tickets....
Would tie in nicely with this image that as I mentioned before appeared in 'Blink'. (All credit to 'be more pacific' who found it at OG forum)

She may also just be there out of coincidence as she had told the doctor that she would make something of her life, walking "in the dust" of the Earth and no longer taking "the big picture" for granted. Hopefully this will have given her time to adapt and evolve in character from the gobby cow she was in the beginning.
Fingers crossed there will be a change I've got no problems with Ms Tate just the character even RTD said "she'd get on your nerves" as a long term companion.

I agree, definately don't think it'll be the real Titannic. I would guessed Kylie as some sort of showgirl type, but after the Dalek two parter, not sure if they'd go for that again, just yet anyway.

I'm guessing Donna will be reintroduced near the end of the episode too. I don't really think 4.1 needs to be dedicated to easing her back into play, she's had enough of an introduction already. Bring her back in at the end of the Xmas special, and then the start of season 4 can just the pair of them getting stuck into things.

I completely respect your opinion and understand where you are coming from.

I am most certainly not an obsessive though.

I was just pointing out that the real tragedy that was the sinking of the Titanic should not be used frivilously i.e. showing it being sunk by the TARDIS or Sea Devils etc.

That is rather different from a historical epic like the movie (although even that was questionable when it suggested the lookout was distracted by Rose and Jack).

That all said, I do strongly suspect that it will NOT be the supposed "real" Titanic that is involved in the Christmas plotline.

Please - no more Fob watches and no Rani...

I don't think this is the Titanic but is a ship like it, possibly called the same in some strange dimension somewhere... Anyone know what the switch the Doctor flicked before the crash was?

Me again, sorry can't stop thinking about this.

If VOTD is the title it gives us a little to go on, since we know there is a ship (titanic in some form) the voyage bit is taken care of. The damned part if taken in the literal biblical sense could mean that those on board are cursed or condemned, destined for hell when they die (if they aren't already dead). Wonder what they did? Maybe there's an egyptian mummy running riot in the hold.....

Or it could be that the damnation or curse is linked to the area they are in. The Sargasso sea in the Atlantic is said to be cursed. Its full of thick seaweed which scuppers ships propellers, there is little wind knackering sailing ships and its inside the Bermuda triangle. Oh its also known as the graveyard of ships. (Sea Devils anyone????)

Sea devils is a fantastic idea!
Didn't RTD mention that was one of his favourite monsters and he'd like to see them back, and since the Titanic is 'Sea based' this is a great opportunity to revive them?

I think it'd be silly not too!
