Hi. Many DVDs come with Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS soundtracks. Which would you say it the best one?
Thanks

There have been other threads about this.

DTS wins handdown in my opinion.

It has better clarity, directionality, dynamic range and prescence than DD.

However when comparing soundtracks it is important to ensure that you do so fairly. Unfortunaetly most DVD's with both soundtracks have a tendancy to have the DTS one recorded at a much higher level than the DD one. This makes the sound appear to be better even though it may not be.

The only DVD I can remember of the top of my head which has both soundtracks at a similar level is "Chicken Run". Unfortunatley it's not that dynamic a soundtrack but does show up the subtleties that DTS can do better than DD. Check out the scene were its starts to rain.

DTS, hands down!

If you do try out Chicken Run, the sound is really good when the chickens are in the oven and all the burners start lighting up; it sounds like you are right in the middle of the oven as each of the speakers take turns making the noise.

Forgot about the burns doing a 360. Yeah that part is good.

It's a while now since I had this movie on.

the only film I have heard both DD and DTS is moulin rouge, and DTS did sound better.

I guess its not as clear cut though, have heard some great DD ones and some not so good DTS ones, I dont like seven DTS much at all.

but fast and furious DTS did nearly give me a heart attack, amazing sound, crappy film

DTS audio CD's also are amazing, shame they arent too popular over here.

For sheer spectacle it's DTS every time.

That's not to say that 5.1 isn't very good, but DTS is just bigger and more engaging.

For people who usually watch movies through a NICAM TV it will blow their socks off!

Moulin Rouge is actually quite a good test disc to demonstrate the two systems - especially the spoof 20th Century FOX intro!

I'm glad my Pioneer supports DTS then

Unfortuantly at the moment my NICAM TV is supplying the treble, the Hi-Fi the Bass and my PC Speakers the rear 2 channels. Dodgy 4 channel sound their

I've no room for a 5.1 sound (my PC speakers are both the my right too)....

Oh come on Kev!

It doesn't take much energy to reorganise things to get the speakers in the right places...

Lay the cables either under the edge of the carpets or behind skirting boards and put head height shelves on the walls to support them.

And let's have no more nonsense about partners of either gender "not liking speakers around the room"!

Get sorted out and enjoy.

Three speakers front (with sub woofer as well), two behind - you know it makes sense!

Or otherwise no Dolby or DTS will be in your house in any proper sense...

Unfortunatly the double bed (far too big for this room but thats what the landlord provided) has to be in the corner and gives me a 75cm space to walk round the room.

Wires don't bother me (they are running round the room, blue taced everywhere as it is), and i'm not allowed to put shelves up (my Freeview box etc are on some plastic floor shelving from Argos!).

Hopefully next year the room will be a tad bigger....

All i need then are a proper 5.1 amp, preferabley one that has at least 5 audio inputs, 4 video inputs, RGB on all Video inputs, twin output, allowing a different source on each one...., (i.e. Watch one video the other)

Audio Inputs : TV, DAB, DVD, Hi-Fi, Portable CD Player
Video Input, VCR (I/O), Freeview, DVD, PC

prefrably with room for future expansion (Tape, Mini-Disc, CD Player, Video Sender etc)....

Anyone any idea how much one would cost, with speakers?

As for not having speakers round the room - some nice pine effect, or silver ones would make it look a lot better

If this was my own room i would have put some shelves and speakers up long since....

If you are in a restricted space there are still ways of getting decent 5.1 or DTS, but the budget might be a bigger problem...

If you can't put up shelves, Argos and Ikea and others - have a range of reasonable floor standing speaker stands - the HiFi buffs won't like them, but they'll do the job for a budget system.

For my main room - which unlike some of the others, I don't want to look like a recording studio - I've gone for the Sony system with the little coffee club size speakers and discrete sub woofer.

Despite its modest size, both 5.1 and DTS sound mighty impressive and you can feel the bass response up through the couch!

Cost about £350 in total and is paired up with a Toshiba DVD, JVC S-VHS VCR and Sky Digibox.

Connections are all RGB SCART except for a co-ax from the DVD to the amp and audio phonos from the digibox.

Widescreen settings are properly sorted out and when the lights are down, I actually prefer it to the cinema as I hate the smell of popcorn!

Save up for when you move to your new digs Kev...
