advice on a 70 - 300 mm zoom lens for slr camera please

hi.

I'm considering getting a digital SLR camera, I want a 300mm zoom lens, for wildlife, safari photos, can anyone recommend one? I know that cost varies a lot - what more do I get for a 400 pound one over a 200 pound one? What spec should I look for?

Camera I am thinking of is canon 350 or 400

Thanks

You can pick up a decent Canon EF 90-300mm f4.5-5.4 for under £100 off eBay and that's for the USM model, a 70-300mm will probably set you back about £300 ish.

I got a Canon 80-200mm f4.5-5.4 myself and it's fantastic quality even at full zoom. I'm thinking of getting the 90-300mm myself for Safari next year though.

The Sigma 70-300mm APO has some great reviews. Just search around on pbase or flickr for examples. It has a 1:2 macro too.

Not a bad price for £100 and only £155 for the macro version

Make sure you get the APO version at £150, the cheaper one isn't as good
Only other real option in that range is the Canon which has IS built in, but at twice the price

I'd second the Sigma 70-300 APO mentioned previously - its very good value for money. I have the Canon 70-300IS - I find the IS very useful but it is twice the price of the Sigma. IQ is about the same on both.

For the 70mm-300mm zoom lens, Nikon is better - consider a Nikon D40 or a D80?

But if you've already got a Canon you can't use the Nikon lenses

True but OP said he was still choosing his camera body as well.

Dunno if it's any help, but I've got a Canon 75 - 300 USM that I was going to stick on ebay - only used once!

How much were you thinking of listing for?

Previous one's have sold for about £100, but I thought that was overpriced so looking for around £75 for it, as It's just in my camera bag not being used!

I just got the Sigma 70-300mm APO, can't recommend it highly enough, the zoom is a bit stiffer than the equivalent Canon but for the price I can't really complain. It does the job, and does it well!

Had a Sigma 70-300mm for just under a year when it packed up. The zoom ring felt like there was sand in it and seized up. Returned it to be told there was a fault with it and was given a new one. That packed up about 14months later.

Thing is they were hardly used and have put me off Sigma lenses. I now have the Cannon version (USM), it feels much better to operate and so far had no problems with it.
