Landline Provider help
I am moving into a new flat that has an inactive bt line. I do not want to use bt so am trying to see if I can get another landline provider.
I have searched online and most of the providers require you to have an active bt number for them to transfer to them Is there a landline provider I can use that will provide a phoen service from scratch without me joining Bt then closing the account to transfer to another privider |

I think it was 6 months, but i'm not sure. This at the time meant I had to stay with BT for a while. |

The wise thing is to have a BT line.
Only BT are forced to allow you to use low cost call providers. Moving your line rental to others usually means you end up paying more. BT with DD and paperless £10.50 / month. Free Caller Display with BT bt.com/btprivacy (Other line rental providers charge £1.50 - £1.75 For £0.00 per month CPS your calls to Primus Saver 2, and get evening and weekend calls free (each call up to 90 mins free - re-dial or pay after 90 mins). Daytime, mobile and international can go via Call 18185. 5p per call to 01 or 02 landlines. Primus daytime rate doesn't start until 08:00 unlike others at 06:00 so you get an extra 2 hours each weekday of free calls, Primus don't have connection charge, but min call charge and charge by the second for any chargeable calls you decide to put their way. Primus: www.planet-talk.co.uk/saver (Make sure you get the free option and don't go for line rental). Call 18185: www.call18185.co.uk |

Bulldog used to. The reason why companies want you to have a BT line is so they don't have to pay the connection charge, as they don't think you'd want to pay around £100 for them to get Open Reach (BT) to install the line for them or they don't want to swallow the cost themselves. At the end of the day even if you pay line rental to another provider (apart from cable) it's still BTs line, but you are not a BT customer, and any faults have to be reported to whoever you pay the line rental to and then they decide whether they want to pay Open Reach (BT) to fix the fault or try and fob you off. So it's a case of having a BT line first before you switch line rental providers, you have to stay with BT for 12 months or pay to get out early, and then when you do switch line rental providers you end up paying more than if you kept BT for line rental and simply put the calls elsewhere. |

since openreach was formed the network has been made avaiable to all service providers. lines are sold by bt wholesale, we dont care who are using them. we just manage the pipeline from the exchange to your house. so just to say we are not responsible for the cost of line installation and rental.

http://www.openreach.co.uk/orpg/pricing/pricing.do Supply a new line - £88 Ex VAT. Transfer a line - £2 Ex VAT. You can see why TalkTalk and the others simply want to transfer a line from BT to theirs, they are happy to swallow the £2 charge, but don't want to swallow the £88 charge or pass that charge onto the customer. Maybe TalkTalk and others should at least offer new lines and pass on the charge, at least people would have choice. This also means Openreach charges BT Retail the same rates, hence BT retail now stating a 12 month contract even if line is already connected up. Splitting BT up like this has really just put the costs up to the end user. |

There has got to be another privider that can provide a landline service from scratch apart from BT.
I cant get bacle as not in street yet, and bulldog was on watchdog so avoiding them like the plague. I really dont want BT as too much hassle to pay them deposits and contracts etc... |

BT only ask for deposits if you have a poor credit score. You'll be stuck with 12 - 18 month contracts with whoever you sign up with. But hey, if you are looking to go out of your way to pay more for less, then don't let us stop you. |

The costs do not bother me, I just don't want bt As been said NO ONE (note not noone) NO ONE else wants to supply the line, don't know how many more times we need to tell you NO ONE else other than those mentioned will at the moment. If you owe money to BT which is why you don't want them, you can just say. The best solution however is BT for line rental, but calls via other providers, this gives you the cheapest deal, plus as no other provider wants to supply line rental from scratch other than IT Plus, who are a little shady with their charges, you are stuck. With IT Plus, you are stuck on rolling 12 month contracts, so if you don't cancel at the 12 months you are stuck with them for another12 months, they also block you from using cheap call providers, so you'll end up paying more in the end, they are also quick to pass debt to debt collectors and bump on extra charges. |

I have to say, though, that I've been with BT since they were the GPO and have never had a problem that took more than a day to sort out. And only a couple of those in some decades. I think you'll find that most companies can be a nightmare if you do have a problem, not just BT. |
