I know she has been a total bi@tch for some time now, but she wasn't always. She used to be a sweet, funny girl in a shiny black mac with bows in her hair if I remember correctly - a bit punky to look at but really sweet. She was a good mum and a nice person. She's still a good mum mostly, but she is spiteful and back-stabbing, deceiptful and really quite nasty.

Can anyone remember when this started to happen? I'm thinking it was around the time she decided that Kevin should buy the garage...

Yeah they seem to have made her really annoying lately, I'm not sure if she's actually changed or whether I've just got sick of her. Not so long ago she was one of my favourite characters but now she's just horrible to everyone it's put me off her.

Way back. Way, way back.
She's nearly always had ideas above her station

Once again they have totally changed someone's character just to fit in with the current storyline.

Sally has always been a bit of a cow, with ideas above her station. I've seen her referred to on here as the Street's Hyacinth Bucket, which I think is a pretty spot-on description. However, her venom has always been directed towards slackers like Janice and Kelly in the past, and she really should have been on Hayley's side throughout this.

Of course, she was miffed that Hayley was put in charge, but she wouldn't have been seen dead drinking in the Rovers at lunchtime with Janice and Kelly, and cackling over a raunchy novel.

The whole thing is a bit contrived just for her to be brought back down to earth with a bump when asking Carla about the PA job, and to make her feel even worse when:

Spoiler

Still, it was funny to see the look on her face when she walked in with Janice and Co., only to realise that Carla was back!

This really annoys me how the scriptwriters change characters completely without reason, thinking the viewers are too daft to notice!

Becky, in Roy's cafe started off as a total nutter - stealing Roy's car, stalking Hayley, mixing with riff-raff, setting up a robbery at the factory and generally being spiteful - now she's turning into an angel!

They bring these 'nasty' characters in, we get used to them, the writers want them to stay but there's no way they can keep having someone relentlessly nasty and have the viewers care about them at the same time. So, if they want them to stay, they alter them completely, to make us more comfortable.

Just look at Shirley in EE, she started off as a horrible person, but slowly she is being moulded into someone we will pity and then like, eventually. Remember Pat Butcher was an rough old brass when she was first in EE? Now, she's respectable. Same thing with Sean, he's also morphing. And Billy Mitchell was a small-time crook at the start, look at him now - loving, respectable family man.

The thing they're doing with Sally seems to be in reverse to what they do with everyone else, making her hateful instead of more likeable. I'm wondering if they are leading up to a big story involving her change of personality?

When Sally first appeared in the Street she was a real cow, almost made Hilda Ogden's hair curl.

I don't see it as character changes, as much as expanding the character from a one-dimensional one into something more rounded. Do we really think that Becky would be nasty all the time? No-one is and as the Cropper's have given her something she has never had before, a chance, it is bound to soften her.

Same with Sally, she was quite flighty when she first appeared, getting splashed by Kevin in the street on the way to a job interview. He softened her by giving her security, but when that security was snatched from her she hit back by having affairs, and she is fiercely protective of her kids as she wants them to have more of a start than she had. She thinks she can only do this by having money behind her, so she tries to make Kevin further himself and has ideas above her station for herself.

I agree about Becky. She was a damaged individual who has been given a chance in life, and some good influences. I hope the character continues to grow.

Pity people don't change as easily as that in 'real' life.

I think Sallys character is great I prefer it when shes more loopy, I think she started going a bit more funny when she wanted Rosie to be a singer.

I think Becky is one of the best characters they have introduced in the last few years. She has loads of potential.

I disagree, there is a lad around our place and he terrorised our house for years, but see him with his nephew and he is a totally different person, really caring and gentle.

Agree again. She drove me bonkers at first but I think that was the idea. I've really warmed to her now. I look forward to future Becky storylines.

Perhaps Becky was basically a nice person who never had a chance and nobody ever gave her a chance before.

I find her loyalty to Hayley very touching.

As for Sally. She is a snob but her scene when she offered Hayley a cup of coffee was totally out of character IMO

I absolutely agree. I read that they were letting her go a while back - haven't heard anything since so I hope it was just a rumour because she is really a brilliant character.

I agree - after she said "only joking" I was quite shocked. That's not Sally - not even she is that horrible. Shoddy writing if you ask me.

Sally is a very selfish character. Years ago, when she worked at the factory before, she had an affair with a guy who was a bit of a psycho. I seem to remember she put her children in danger then.

What really put me off the character was when she was shagging the garage owner and Rosie found out about it. Any good mother would have stopped there and then, but Sally continued and put Rosie under the most appalling pressure by making her keep quiet.

And let's not forget the day she tried to force feed Rosie with a morning-after pill.

I totally went off her with the whole private school buisness and trying to rule Kevins and the girls' lifes, getting Rosie into private school, drama school the whole buisness with Craig. Trtying to get Sophie into private school(so glad she put her in her place) I feel so sorry for her shes nothing next to Rosie in Sally's eyes. Then she went to run the garage and made Kevins life hell (again) I feel sorry for him too he's always wrong and his opinoins count for nothing.
