Pointless Soap Characters
EE
Li Preeti Charlie Gus Corrie Dev (even for comedy terrible acting reasons..he's useless) Jamie Dev's annoying daughter The Mortons Betty (though keep her in! She's an institution! Give her a storyline!!) Rita's alky mate Cilla (pointless without Les) Emmerdale The fish-eyed one that goes out with Paddy Paddy (especially his fake stuttering) ...why are these people wasting screen time!?

Theres a difference between pointless & under/badly used, as you say with Betty, give her a storyline, same can go for lots of soap characters, they become pointless, if they have no decent storylines, or in some cases no real storylines at all.

I've already had my rant today, but NAOMI in EE, poor girl, was so badly used! Had to snog Sonia and Garry, had no other storyline and then got packed off in a taxi just as sje was about to get on the property ladder.
I hope she comes back and gets some decent storylines, I think it's so unfair when they use a character for one sensational storyline and then just let them moulder away in a corner of the plot cupboard until someone notices they are still there and calls them a taxi

Shirley got dropped with that whole family I think, I forget their surname. She was supposed to be Ash's love-interest. They killed off her cat as part of a storyline, so she got off quite lightly lol.
Steve and Mel were ok though, they had many a storyline and an explosion into the bargain, oh and Mel went to Spain in the time-honoured fashion. |

And you can't slate Winston, Winston's one of the longest standing characters! ;-P

Bob & Viv Hope - they're in the show for comedy, but are totally unfunny. Emmerdale is frequently spoiled by this awful pair; their new born sprogs are pointless too.
Marlon & Donna. He's more or less a slapstick character now. Donna is the most unconvincing cop since...Barraclough I wish they'd ditch the lot of 'em. |

Ooh, was it Ferrera? Also pointless in the long run, we didn't get to keep even one of them! But at least they squished lots of storylines in whilst they were there, the whole paternal abuse thing that got ditched because the father in question had to leave, the secret brother thing leading to the incest thing and the spare kidney story,

Corrie
Dev (even for comedy terrible acting reasons..he's useless) Jamie Dev's annoying daughter The Mortons Betty (though keep her in! She's an institution! Give her a storyline!!) Rita's alky mate Cilla (pointless without Les) In Corrie I dont think Dev is pointless, he's just a small part to have in the shop. Jamie- yes, pointless. They've thrown him in the cab office just to give him something to do but he's not even needed there. The Mortons- Unfortunatly, they are slightly pointless. Though I do like Jerry. Rita's alky mate, Doreen- yeah pointless. I'd also add on Joanne, Tyrone and Molly to that. |

Deano Wicks. What exactly has he done since he arrived in Walford except get drunk and show us the most appalling acting on television?

That's a bit harsh about Bob and Viv. Viv is one of the longest running characters. Maybe they should take a back seat for a while though, they've been given an awful lot of storylines in the past year or so...Their wedding, the late in life pregnancy, Bob doing a runner...and he was also involved with the Who Killed Tom King storyline too. I think they should rest the characters for a while, and besides they are often best used in light-relief sort of storylines.

Sorry, but I just don't find them amusing. The comedy seems aimed at 6 year olds at times. No one's ever explained to me what's funny about them

Yes, I agree some of it is a little daft...but they certainly have moments that make me laugh, and I think if they were on screen a little less, the permanent comedy would be more tolerable - and more funny.
Maybe my sense of humour is different from most - I've seen others say they are funny. I still can't stand them though

I'd agree with all EE

Rita's alky mate, Doreen- yeah pointless. I'd also add on Joanne, Tyrone and Molly to that. Jamie, Mike's dead, Danny's AWOL, Frankie's gorn, Leanne, err, sloppy seconds, thirds, fourths.... & general persona non gratis so theres not a lot left for him, same happened with Cieran, the storylines dried up, but he just packed his bags & left. |

All corrie:
Jamie definitely. Maria may become pointless all they seem to do is have her ride around and get in trouble for it. Violet. |

I think there are three things wrong with all the soaps.
1. Too many episodes per week. With that you need a bigger canvas to work with and too many stories and some characters get short shrifted and back burnered. 2. Too many characters arriving every week. Some are there just to fill in a vacancy . (ex: a new factory worker). Some come in with a big story all prepared. But it becomes too confusing, and pointless. It's a shame, because one can get attached to one of these transition players. 3. Some viewers do tend to complain that if a new character doesn't make an impression soon after arriving, then they are pointless or boring. When in the early years, not a lot of people cared, if some of these characters are slow starters. I think it has to do with the changing of the guard with all these big storylines dealing with murder and affairs. |

Maria's pretty darn pointless in Corrie, as is Violet - mainly because they keep giving her such abysmal storylines.
Corrie have got quite a few actually - Vernon, Molly, Joanne, Kirk...... |

Charlie Slater (EastEnders) doesn't serve any purpose. Even when he had "his girls" to fuss over, he wasn't much use, even less so now. I think they've tried to make him a comedy character of sorts now, but the actor has no comic timing so he doesn't fit that role either.
Garry Hobbs & Minty Peterson (EastEnders) rarely do anything besides talk about all the "fit birds" they'd love to pull. I never saw the point in adding Dominic Reilly to the Hollyoaks cast. Colleen Smart (Home and Away) serves no purpose, particularly evident after today's episode (on Channel 5) where we had the pointless bowls team storyline. She used to be good as a gossip queen but that's dimished over the years. Toadie Rebecchi (Neighbours) doesn't serve a purpose IMO, although many would disagree, I'm sure. |
