What, pray tell, is wrong with having a baby with your friend, whether they be gay or straight?

I think it's great that the BBC director general, is putting the quality and standards of EastEnders, ahead of increased ratings.

Interesting that the BBC think it's too weak! and not the other way around. Either way, although Eastenders has improved i think it's going to suffer ANOTHER knock, now that Stella and May would have left.

I agree. Its good he says he wants quality above anything else. Also good he has told them to take more risks.

For God's sake. EastEnders is my favourite soap too, but why the hell bring other soaps into it? I hate it when people do this. When someone mentions EE in a Corrie thread you're all so quick to jump on them, but it's OK for you to slag Coronation Street off?

Get a grip and grow up. People like what they like.

This is good news i think, it's quality rather than quantity after all.

Yeah but EastEnders is more or less doing five episodes a week now anyway as each episode is something like 28 minutes in length while the likes of Corrie and Emmerdale are normally only about 23 minutes per episode.

ah that's true! i think most 30 minute programs with breaks are actually on 21 minutes, and 1 hour programs with breaks are 41-42 minutes. I once looked at some of my boxsets

Great, we have another soap v soap thread. Well done OP.

I don't think EE needs 5 episodes. It's fine as it is.

I really hate this kind of journalism. Take the following line:

'EastEnders — whose stars include June Brown who plays Dot Branning — has seen ratings drop to a record low in May of four million viewers.'

It's a complete warping of the facts, using an isolated rating to give the impression that EE is a soap in crisis. It's not, and has been performing consistently well recently.

Grr, this kind of thing really annoys me!

Back to the topic - I'm glad EE isn't going five nights. I think it's the right decision.

I think the BBC will increase EE to five nights a week next year; because of the loss of Neighbours. They will have to try and maintain their ratings share, and an extra addition of EastEnders will help them.

Because according to the article - the program is currently 'too weak' to go to 5 nights.
It has nothing to do with Corrie

Isn't there supposed to be a new Liverpudlian ongoing-drama to fill the gap??

The Liverpool based soap, has not bee confirmed as Neighbours replacement. This new soap might not gain the sort of ratings that Neighbours does.
