Hi Stuart - interesting review, thanks! Am going to be very interested to compare the reviews of those seeing the previews with those of us who are seeing it after opening night - am intrigued to see if they change anything.

Did they miss a song for your show? The timings seem a little awry.... Last Fri, it started at 1940 ish, interval about 2040, don't know what time we re-started but it was at least 2155 before the final curtain came down.
From the other reviews, I'm sure we didn't get an extra song either...
Did Elvis do quite a long song? I found it a little too long and was suffering Lee withdrawal symptoms with the sudden cold turkey time of no Lee!

Oh dear! Think some people are missing the point. 
The show was originally written for children - to be performed as a school play. IMHO this production works so well, because they have stayed very faithful to the origins of the show.
It is meant to appeal to children, to reflect how a school production would be performed.
It's not meant to be a glossy, high tech West End show - but rather a homely, fun - yes 'childish' - show. Costumes made by mum and scenery and props created by teachers and pupils.

I'm all for basic sets if it means top quality artists though and it sounds like the narrator is a gem.

Sorry if you misunderstood my post. This is certainly NOT like a kids school production - anything of the sort.
It is simply in keeping with the spirit of that original.
Worked for me anyway. And if anyone is not happy paying full wack for their tickets, I'll happily buy them off them.
hi. I have only just seen this thread and wanted to say that I saw Joseph on Monday as part of a hyped and wild audience. I have done a review in 1-10 parts as lots of bits and pieces to say on the Lee Appreciation thread as I have always been a Lee fan and wanted to answer lots of specifics that the Lee fans had been wonderign about. Tried to not do spoilers but I guess its upto you if you want to read it. I posted it last night about ten-ish so you will have to either wade through or search on my name in the Lee thread to get it. Sorry can't retype - I am not that quick. But it was a good review as I loved both Lee and the show and would defy anyone not to have a great night.

Thanks for all the reviews - it's been great to read! I am going on Monday (and hoping Lee doesn't have the night off to have a rest before press night ), and I'm really excited now!
I'm a Joseph Virgin too, so it will all be very new to me (I haven't been to the theater in a bout 20 years either!)

Stuart, thanks for the review. I haven't seen this production (yet) but did see the 1991 version and I agree with you about Act 2 - I never understood the point of having Any Dream Will Do in the show twice, or the Megamix ("let's repeat the entire show in 15 minutes!") But despite that it does sound incredibly fun.
Well, I have a slightly different story to tell of the performance tonight. Firstly, Lee was gorgeous, fantastic and every other superlative you can throw at him so don't worry.
I've just got home after a sweaty night in London. Thankfully the airconditioning in the auditorium seemed to be working so we were kept cool throughout the nights goings on. Yes, my friends we had a few issues!! by the way, for any of you worried about seats to the very edge I can tell you that even though my dress circle tickets said restricted view I was able to see nearly everything except the very left of the stage, which was not much of a problem until....well I'm getting ahead of myself.
The anticipation in the auditiorium was electric, children and adults talking excitedly waiting for curtain up. I can't believe how nervous I was, it was like I was standing behind that curtain waiting to go on. About five minutes late the first half began, Preeya came looking gorgeous and yes tiny, where does that voice come from. The roar went up as Lee appeared in all his glory, looking happy and relaxed. I agree with what everyone else has said about his natural ability and talent. His comic timing is superb and his charisma holds the audience completely.
Close every door was heart breakingly beautiful and the rest of the audience thought so too.
So what's the problem you may ask...well.
The curtain went down, ice creams were dutifully bought, scoffed and then we all returned to our seats. 5 minutes went by, an announcement said please be patient. 10 minutes went by and a scared looking man appeared with a microphone. He was sorry to say that due to technical difficulties the stage had got stuck and they couldn't move it. Massive groans throughout the audience. But, the cast would stand at the front of the stage and perform a concert version of the second half. Loud cheers. 5 minutes later, after some changing of costumes, the cast appeared at a side door of the auditorium and filed onto the stage in front of the curtain. It was quite a surreal sight. Lee came on pumping the air with his fists. He looked genuinley happy that they could at least come on and sing for us.
So, we had the full cast except for the children, who wouldn't physically fit onto the stage. The cast were brilliant, they valiantly performed there hearts out even though they could hardly move for lack of space. Pharoah was just brilliant, and a great adliber. The brothers also did all they could to spice up their songs, Jacob did something funny which I didnt catch cos he was far left.
I feel like I'm rushing through this but it's late and already forgetting details.
Throughout all of this Lee performed like a complete trouper, danced with Preeya, didsome lovely egyptian moves, what a nice mover he is
and all in his loin cloth, oh what a struggle it was to watch!!! Sadly there was no megamix or CED reprise and there was not curtain call but there was still a standing ovation as they filed off stage out of the side door.
So, this is one of the querks of going to a preview. Would I have liked to see the full show, see him rise above the auditorium, of course, but this was a unique show and I felt priveledged to be in the company of these talented people for 2 and a half hours. Oh, and the other up side is that we'll either get our money back or get to see it again, I know which I'm going to go for. But that's just being greedy cos I'm going in October anyways.
So, Lee was everything and more I could have hoped for and I can look forward to seeing the show in it's entirety in October, if not sooner. I thank you, and good night.

Thanks for that. What a shame you didn't get to see the second half properly, but at least they didn't just cancel and, as you say, you get to see it again!

Actually the first guy that came up on stage was worse than useless, he was theatre staff, you could see he was nervous as hell and I agree looked totally scared, but they shouldn't have sent him on; he said something like "problem ... much regret ... call your point of sale tomorrow lunchtime for something" and then fled, everyone in the stalls was shouting "call point of sale for what?" as he hadn't said refund/rebook or what was going on. It was the second guy (who was production rather than theatre staff so a bit more used to being on a stage I think) that came on and was far more composed and explained that it was a problem with the set.
You missed that when the cast did come on they were each introduced by the choreographer which was nice, she also explained that one part was long and orchestral while there was supposed to be a "beautiful dance" going on and we'd just have to sit through that part, but as it turned out all the Brothers each did a wacky dance of their own when it did come to that part, which was hilarious, especially the big guy that also plays the baker. Unfortunately the choreographer also killed the megamix, the Musical Director was all ready to go into it but she came back in the side and frantically pushed through some of the applauding audience to wave at him and tell him to cut it

To be fair from the front stalls it was clear that Lee was a bit alarmed at the concept of the unexpected "concert version" and at first was pretty reserved, but at one point the Narrator did that funny egyptian dance which he joined in with, and got a huge clap/laugh for it, and from that point on he totally loosened up and got into the fun of the occasion. It was like someone flicked a "party" switch inside him.

I was sitting in Row D. He whacked his head straight in to the speaker stack that was hanging at the side of the stage as he left - think it must be low headroom, after all he's really tall, and it's normally just kids that run up those steps. Not sure if he did it deliberately or not but he stayed in character and sort of bounced back off it in doddery old man fashion which is why everyone was laughing.
I think some credit must go to the lighting operator who was clearly running everything on manual, having done some lighting work before it all has to be programmed in advance and you basically sit there pressing a "GO" button all the time to trigger the next pre-programmed lighting movement, but he did an excellent job of finding the right lighting channels and giving the cast basic but appropriate lighting all the time. And the Musical Director (conductor) was loving it, he was rocking around like crazy in some of the songs, dancing as much as the cast were, terriffic opportunity for him to have an "up close" session with the cast and really show them what he wanted them to do!
Full credit to the production management who turned what could have been a VERY disappointing night had they just cancelled it into what may well turn out to be one of the most special and memorable nights of the whole run. They should have set malfunctions more often!!!

“10) brothers are great as is Pharoah - Benjamin is a dead ringer for Keith - would have been a good part for him. But I still think Lee steals every scene he is in.
OK that is my top ten - overall its an amazing night out even if you (or your family or friends more like) are not massive Lee fans. Good for kids but enough power, passion, dry humour bits for adults to think its for them as well. I could even cope with the kids choir and I am not a big fan of children singing on mass - they were clearly very talented and fully integrated into the show - as I said earlier brilliant direction.

Babyfan I hope you don't mind that I have quoted your posts from the Lee App Thread I just thought it would be easier for those who don't normally go on that thread to read here. I think other Joe Fans would be interested to read anything re Lee's reviews.
Thanks googleking, I knew I'd miss some stuff out and obviously you had a much better vantage point. It would certainly have been easy to be very disappointed but I just think the cast did their very best to entertain us in difficult circumstances.

Thanks Electract and Googleking for your reviews. I can imagine your disappointment when you thought the show was going to be cancelled and I bet the audience were very relieved to know that the cast, and especially Lee, were going to come on and sing anyway.
I hope they told you that you could get a refund/rebook BEFORE the second half began so that you could really sit back and enjoy the show in the full knowledge that you could see the 'proper' show again.

See they are getting quite a lot of complaints from theatre goers about the use of mobile phone/camera taking!
It also seems some feel it is far too loud and ALW is working to make changes.

I thought you weren't allowed to take photos - is it illicit photo taking on mobiles that they are complaining about? Also do you mean loudness of the show or of the audience?
I went to see the show last night which was brilliant even with the technical difficulties. I thought that the impromtue concert version was superb, and i think that the actors improvising was impressive and thoroughly enjoyable as an audience member. Pharohs line of the "all the worlds a stage, well not mine tonight" was pure genius. The brothers dancing during the dance break in the music had most the audience crying with laughter. . The audience had a fantastic time and although the first guy on the stage was not completely clear about what was happening, i think that those who stuck around had a wonderful time. The second guy made everything clearer to the audience and when the choreographer introduced everyone by their name it was touching and really got the audience on the companys side.What really showed through all this was the company as a whole, they all stuck together and supported each other and worked off each other. The audience were fully behind them clapping along during all the songs and the cast were deservedly given a standing ovation at the end of the show. The mega mix was missed but it wouldnt have been possible in the space they had.

You are completely right photography is banned in all theatres including mobiles, the complaint is that a lot of girls are using them.
The music problem, critics feel it is far too loud, so ALW is making some fine tuning changes just to bring it down a little, I understand.
It wasn't loud enough during the overture last night when even sitting in the front stalls all you could hear were the rabble in the cheap seats upstairs continuing to chatter away

I hate it when people do that.
They seem to think it hasn't really started until the singing starts. Though I do remember being told during my music degree that overtures in operas were originally a way to get everyone settled down before the 'real' performance began!
