Blocking an ipod

I had my ipod stolen last night and was wondering if there is any way I can block it so it is of no use to anybody else.I know that when I connect it to my mac and open itunes it only syncs music from the playlist I have preselected.Does this mean whoever has it now can't put any music on it or am I just hoping? Also is there any way I can find the ipods details such as serial number from my mac? Thanks for any help given by you at this time I just want to stop the bastards using it or if they sell it on for it to be no use to anyone.

Unfortunately not. As far as I know, you can't 'block' an i-pod.

The £$%£$% that stole your i-pod can re-set it and then put their own tunes on it or even use 3rd party software to upload your tunes from your i-pod to their PC/Mac if they want.

Weirdly enough, it's been announced that Apple have just applied for a patent on anti-theft technology for future iPods - just a bit too late for you, Andy. Link

not much consolation, but surely if you had tracks you bought through iTunes on the iPod then although they may be able to import them onto another PC, they would still need your iTunes account login to be able to authorize them on another computer? It might be way of tracking a stolen iPod, in that you can report it as stolen and if someone tries to play one of the drm protected files from your account, it gets logged and they can trace the IP.. just a thought.
