cracking covers
looking for any cover/remix versions of songs that i should be made aware of - preferably where the artist has taken the original and really made it work.
some of the best finds i've had so far : johnny cash - hurt (NIN) counting crows - crossing muddy waters (john hiatt) dave matthews band - all along the watchtower (dylan) eva cassidy - fields of gold (sting) garbage - milk [the wicked mix] (remix of the original by tricky) jewel - smells like teen spirit (nirvana) k's choice - weak (skunk anansie) matchbox 20 - time after time (cyndi lauper) |

When I heard Johnny Cash's brilliant version of Hurt, it was near the end when I realised it was a cover of NIN's. I think that is what a cover version should sound like ie. unrecognizable from the original, otherwise, what's the point?
There are probably loads I could think of but for now all I got is; Theme From M*A*S*H by Manic Street Preachers Eloise by The Damned. |

Killer - Taul Paul's version is amazing. I'm not sure who did the original as there's quite a few versions around

Even Dylan started playing it like that. Joe Cocker - With A Little Help... Greatest Beatles Cover? Or maybe Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds by William Shatner? Roberta Flack has covered a lot songs. I like her version of Suzanne by Leonard Cohen. No one get's inside a song like her imo. Otis Redding - Try A Little Tenderness. Has also done great covers of Stones and Beatles songs. Clapton - Crossroads. I think what Thin Lizzy did with Whisky In The Jar was just fab. Could go on forever really. |

A few great covers spring to mind: either Amy Grant or Counting Crows - Big Yellow Taxi Nikki French - Total Eclipse of the Heart Presidents... - Video Killed The Radio Star Lemonheads - Mrs Robinson Boyzone - Baby, Can I Hold You Tonight (seriously. People might scoff at Boyzone but to take a song once sang by a person of the opposite sex and make it another brilliant song does actually take some skill) Toploader - Dancing In The Moonlight Soft Cell - Tainted Love |

Plus he did the cracking Somebody To Love (Queen) on the Five Live ep. |

Then there's also:Noooooooooooooooooooo. I loathed her cover with a passion, what was with her singing her own maky-up words for one of the verses that didn't even scan or ryhme? Ev'ry now and then I get a little bit restless and I dream of somethin' wild Ev'ry now and then I get a little bit helpless and I'm lying like a child in your arms Ev'ry now and then I get a little bit angry and I know I gotta get out and cry Ev'ry now and then I get a little bit terrified and then I see the look in your eyes And then verse 3, the lines you recognise from the Nikki French remake: Ev'ry now and then I know you'll never be the boy you always wanted to be But ev'ry now and then I know you'll always be the only boy who wanted me the way that I am Ev'ry now and then I know there's noone in the universe as magical and wond'rous as you Ev'ry now and then I know there's nothing any better; there's nothing that I just wouldn't do. As you rightly say, the words in verse 3 don't seem to "fit", but the blame for that lies in the hands of the same guy who wrote this otherwise brilliant song, not with Nikki French! |

What I can think of at the moment
Metallica "Whisky in the Jar" and Thin Lizzys version Heir Apparent "Sound of Silence" (Simon & Garfunkel) Patty Smyth "Downtown Train" - was covered by Rod Stewart who I thought was killing it until I heard Tom Waits original version! |

This is going back a few years
.. but Bryan Ferry has produced far and away the best modern cover of 'Smoke gets in your eyes'.Rod Steward's recent attempt was just embarrasing IMO |
