New Symbian phones for 2008

Good morning to you all.

I currently have a Nokia N73 phone , with about 7 months of a 18 month contract left to run.

I'm now getting the calls from Vodafone to extend my contract by another 6 months to a year etc , in return for £25 put on my account etc. I informed them that I thought they were having a laugh if they expected me to commit to them for that extended period of time , for a miserly £25. I said I'd only consider 6 months , & that would be if they could up my texts from 1000 to unlimited.

Apparently they said they couldn't do this now , however they would be able to when I was eligible to upgrade in a few months time.

When asked why I wouldn't commit now (the cheek) I just informed them that the deal was a cheek , & nearer the time there would be another phone I would possibly want , & another network might do me a better deal. Sorry forgot to say , I'm currently on Vodafone.

The N73 was my first Symbian run phone , & I'm very impressed. Ok it can run slow sometimes , however I've been fortunate & the f/ware is stable.

Can anyone enlighten me as to possible new Symbian phones (Nokia or otherwise) due for possible release in late 2007 , or early part of 2008 as it's good to know what's on the horizon.

Hi James,

Have you seen the forthcoming Sony Ericsson W960i. No release date yet but it runs on the Symbian OS and has a nice set of features including touchscreen and 8Gb built in memory.

I've just got the SE W950i to replace my Nokia N95 (nice but didn't get on with the media player and the slider seemed a bit fragile, as the phone lives in my pocket). I love the touchscreen interface, it works very nicely evem with my fingertip (and althought they aren't sausage like, they ain't dainty either).

Nice web browsing and great music player so i hope to upgrade to the W960i when it appears and I can afford it.

Worth checking out

Hi Dave , many thanks for that.

Have to say it looks very nice indeed.

Never really been into these SE Walkman phones , however that's possibly more to do with the fact that I've never needed to listen to music on my phone , rather than not liking the idea.

The fact it has those specs & is has Symbian OS , certainly appeals to me.

Will keep a close eye on further news & possible release date.

Regards James

Just posted this in another thread, but the more the merrier

The RIZR Z8 is Motorola Symbian effort. I've seen the video playback quality of this thing, and it's really quite stunning.

I've never been keen on Motorola phones but that does look quite nice. I think I would want to play with one before I bought it though

With it being Symbian, it should THEORETICALLY not have any of the Moto user interface issues of old i.e. if you like Symbian, you should like this.

As you say, probably worth playing with first to make sure.

To be honest your original request for a "symbian" phone is a little confusing as you didn't actually explain what you liked about it. If its the UI and the general ergonomics of the UI then its actually a Series 60 phone that you are looking for. If its the ability to install additional apps/satnav etc then a Symbian phone is the correct choice. You must then decide if the Series 60 (Nokia phones) is what you like, or if its a UIQ (SonyEricsson/Moto phone) that you prefer. The only reason i mention it was that UIQ can be a bit different from Series 60 users, and I've seen quite a few friends move from S60 to UIQ, and then sell and rebuy a S60 phone
