Internet phone unlocking scam
Clangerette

I paid nearly £5 for a remote unlocking code then they told me they couldn't unlock it but suggested I ask the network for the code. When I asked for a refund they said I had paid for information to unlock my phone and that was it!! What a scam!

Let me guess, was this company unlock telecom or unlock mob by any chance? Read reviews about them on the web and they seem to be taking people for a ride. It's in their terms and condition exactly which handsets they unlock (and it's the ones the free nokia software unlock) but they people seem to miss the info.

Someone should complain to consumer direct about them.

Yes it was unlock telecom. Who should I complain to?

Yourself. You ticked the box to agree to the Terms when you requested the code. If you'd have read them you'd have noticed that they supply information on the best way to unlock the phone.

Same as that scam a few years ago "Send £5 and I'll tell you how to cut your electricity bills" , which turned out to be "Stop using things which use electricity" - does exactly what it says on the tin.

From that page:

Quote:
“Our system will advise you on the best method to unlock your mobile. If we supply you with this information you will still be in credit with us for another mobile unlock from our list on this page. This can be requested at anytime in the future via our contact page.”

I'd contact consumer direct as I expect that they're in breach of consumer law. Also since they haven't supplied you a service then you can request a refund under the distance selling regulations.

Search for "Consumer Direct" on the web and drop them a message.
