Acording to this article, firms are eager to have their products in the BB house. Even though they are not allowed to have labels on to say who's products they are, it's all free publicity.

Even though they take lables off our cover them up its easy to spot products from the box or packet, colourings etc. Big firms know colour attracts us and the more recognisable we just reach for it!!

Im sure last year only some stuff was covered up. A box of Persil or Ariel washing power was covered up yet someone was walking around eating a packet of Walkers crisps with no such covering.

Last year some people were desparate to find out where they could buy the pebble duvet covers from.
I wonder what will be the favourite product this year.
I read that they have WHITE carpet in the house this year, with colourful rugs. I wonder how long it will bw before someone spills Red wine on it.

The ITC has lots of rules on prduct placement. It bascally boils down to the fact that nobody involved with the show can receive any a benefit (in any form whatsoever) from a product being on the show. However ITC also say as a genral rule for ANY product in a shows

"products should not, as a general rule, be referred to in audio by brand name, or shown in close-up or from an angle which displays the branding to best advantage, or for any significant length of time. "

It would appear to therfore okay to show ANY brand name provided that the HM dont make refernce to it. Even in a reality show where they are filming "reality" , they would not be able to show a HM going on about how good the lager is.

Furthermore there is always advertisers to consider. If persil wanted to pay a lot of money for a BB ad because BB is so popular, they would be a bit miffed to see Daz being used in the show. So should BB show the HM with persil? Well not unless C4 want a massive fine they wont, as this would be regarded as showing the product on the show because Persil bought an ad from them. It used to be the case that car manufactures insisted that if they bought an ad, no rival car could be shown in the show.

Original Source often supply BB, and manage to make a big fuss about it on their website! It amazes me that people are so slavish in their following of BB... even to the extent of rocketing sales of Black Tower?!

And we were all totally aware that the weekly shopping was supplied by the local branch of "Tesco"; they even did a feature on it in BBLB, so much for keeping it a secret...........

Would that be the Tesco that is barely a 3min walk from the BB house, where eager fans go and shout over the wall at them? If so i was one of those fans

Firstly, how on earth do the ITC police this rule? Does a panel look through thousands of hours of ordinary programming just in case a product is featured in the way they describe? What constitutes "best advantage" and a "significant" length of time? And does anyone ever get penalised by the ITC for breaking this ambiguous rule?

It's patently obvious that there'll be plenty of instances where products will be referred to without being censored; I remember Sue from CBB2 saying that "Nike sucks" without being censored, and Spencer commenting that the brand of coal given to use on the outside stove was "shit" whilst holding up a bag clearly branded with the name of the coal supplier.

They are fighting a loosing battle in trying to police product placement. It's a bit pathetic in Sex and the City, for example, when they blank out certain things Carrie has because a company has paid for her to be seen using them, yet at the same time her Vivienne Westwood luggage, plastered with insignia, is completely free from blurring, presumably because Viv hasn't given the show a kickback for using it!

I remember during BB2 when the HMs were discussing what make the plasma screen was, they had to cut the sound...

But there's product placement in films (esp. minority report) do they ITC have any say over them when shown on tv?

They mostly rely on other people (viewers!), to tell them. Once they have recieved a complaint they will act.

As with everything, everything is taken on merit. If a HM say says "Sony TVs are the best", that will be treated as being very different to Davina saying it (why she would want to in another matter). With films, there are something that just have to be lived with. The obviouse example is James Bond movies, the ITC realsie there is not much they can do about it (such is life). Unless it was soooooo blatent (the ITC say it must have more than five o's) that cuts would be demanded.

The cover-up rule is stupid.
To name one example, it's blatently (sp) obvious to viewers that when HM's are eating potato snacks from a cylindrical container that they are Pringles!!!, etc.

Apparently the cookware in the BB4 house is from the product range by Nigella Lawson, who has her cookery show on.....Channel 4.

Last year the BB web site was stuffed with the list of suppliers, right down to the chicken food.

H77 still sleeps on his BB1 bed (Ikea)
