I've switched off!

Classic Dr Who isn't a patch on the current RTD version.........

I used to love it as a kid but times change.

A lot of looking through rose tinted glasses on the Dr Who forum

Watching these episodes might stop all the complaining about shoddy special effects in the new series.

Hopefully!

I thought that the first episode was fascinating from a historical viewpoint, but I agree with all the recent posts here that a lot of the later stuff (everything post Tom Baker IMO) was utter cobblers and how lucky we are to have it back in the RTD version.

The Doctor did not say he was a Timelord in the first episode. Anybody know when we first hear the term Timelord?

I fell asleep during the episode with Peter Davison :S

I definately think I prefer David Tennant to be honest (and hes much better looking then all the others )

Looking back over the old series, I honestly believe Tennant is the best Doctor ever.

I`ve been watching these on and off all day. They are quite laughable really. I just couldn`t keep my attention on them; they are so unbelieveably amateurish.

Thank goodness for Ecclestone and Tennant!

That would be Patrick Troughton's last story, "The War Games".

I'm just watching The Three Doctors (on Sky+) The guy playing Omega is laughably over acting - it's so bad it's good.

i think it is almost impossible to compare classic who to RTD who, its virtually a different programme with the same names used

I caught a bit of Sylvester McCoy's episodes this morning, and it was just awful, like bad Childrens BBC! Although was quite amusing to see Anne Reid, kept waiting for her to get out her "little straw!"

Have to admit though caught the end of a Tom Baker episode just now before "Rose" and it was infintley better, had a more familiar feel to what we have now, except obviously without the production values of today.

I consider them the same programme in the sense that one is a continuation and evolution of the other, but I think it's very unfair to judge the production values, special effects, etc of episodes made decades ago and compare them unfavourably to the new series.

People should have a look at the contemporary TV that was being shown when these episodes were first broadcast, the production values are exactly the same. It's just reflective of how TV was made back then.

I agree that it's unfair to judge the effects etc. by modern standards, but that said, while there are great ideas in many of the old episodes, they tend to lack the depth and the characterisation of the new series.

I love both series.

I started work today, so i didn't get to see the marathon. I will do tomorrow though But there's alot of new series episodes and the movie tomorrow isnt there?

Oh well! I wouldn't have watched them all anyway The old series is great. I became a full time fan with the new series, but the old series is so fun and good. It's different and it's good to watch because half the stuff in the old series you get wouldn't be in the new series.

I love both series, old and new, but i wouldn't have the attention span to watch a hole day of either TBH.

I love both series and don't possess Rose coloured specs...

what made the classic series special are the stories (of course there were naff ones just like the new series no difference there) and the charcterisation for me (again yes you are going to get naff ones there just like the new series) .

For me the sfx and production values (which are of course higher on the new series purely because they have more money) are on the old series unimportant (they were up to the standards of the day which surely was all that was required) I used my imagination and it took me somewhere else, somewhere exciting and wonderful.

The fans of the old series are after all the ones making it now so it must have something out of the ordinary, something special to give that legacy. To compare the two to the detriment of either is to me missing the unique qualities of both

The first episode of the chase was slow, surprising my seven year old still watched it, both caves and curse were great off there time of course so no rose tinted glass just appreciating them for what they are..

You really have to have been watching back then, to appreciate how different and exciting DW was.

I quite agree,it's difficult to appreciate the classic series when episodes are thrown together randomly like they are being this weekend. I'm currently watching Tom Bakers 3rd series on some old vhs,dvd and *cough* obtained via the internet. Only through watching in chronological order, can you fully understand the development of each Doctors characters and the relationship with various companions. Another reason why I'd like to have seen official DVD's released in sequence.

Comparing the old and new series is a bit like saying who's the best cricketer - WG Grace or Kevin Pieterson, you can really only compare the merits of a player against their contemporary's, same with Doctor Who....

And the old series stands up damn well to shows it was up against at the time, just as the new one does....
