Buying R1 Dvd's
HI, i want to buy a R1 dvd from canada, with them it's £21 (converted) including shipping, or £29 @ play.com.
Now should i get it from canada and risk customs finding it, or buy from play? |

Check to see if the Canadian company is customs friendly or perhaps ask the forum their experiences with the said company.
So far the one Canadian based company I have delt with has never been hit with a customs charge on orders over the import limit. Be advised that a £29 R1 import can still have a customs penalty even if ordered from Play, when you add it to your shoppin cart you will be asked to confirm that you are aware of the possible customs charge on the purchase. |

I have bought several discs from a Canadian site with no problems whatsoever. Disregarding the contents,be they t-shirts,cds,dvds or whatever,in twenty years I have only ever had one parcel opened and checked by customs.

Is that including a separate shipping charge (which you won't get taxed on)? Play are the only shop I know that don't separate out the goods and the shipping components of the price. On many purchases where I've been just over the magic £18 limit I've managed to avoid getting taxed - it's a bit of a lottery. Even if you do get taxed though, you should only be stung for around 7 quid plus the hassle of paying the post office, so probably worth risking it. |

Well if that's as cheap as it gets you takes the risk - 18 or 26 quid odd depending on if it gets stopped, or £29 for sure from play.

hi, bought the dvd from dvdsoon.com (canada) no custom problems, the box was marked gift, but it had the name of the dvd and the price of the dvd on a sticker on the back of the box, which is strange, if the postie wanted it he could have twocked it couldn't he.

I would be surprised if 1 in 10 of the non courier packages are inspected by UK customs. The sheer number would make it a logistical nightmare and the poor dears are so over worked with catching the people who bring a few bottles too many across the channel

Just had a $30 amazon shipment stopped (another 8 quid) so it doesn't always work - they didn't open it though, just looked at the number on the customs declaration.
Doubt that there's anything very sophisticated in place to track shipments though. Also, most of the time it seems that the post office don't know how to handle customs charges (even though they've recently added the customs charge box to the "we waited until you left for work" cards they put through the letterbox), so I doubt that there are that many parcels in the system being taxed. |

www.dvdboxoffice.com
free shipping worldwide (in fairness they are not the fastest) - packages are routed through Amsterdam warehouse, so no customs charges. |

I've never pre-ordered from DVDBoxoffice, but when buying something they have in stock I find it usually comes in a week or so. Not bad at all, considering shipping is included in the price which is most likely a few quid cheaper than anywhere else anyway

Price wise they can be exceptionally good and for the most part a few extra days here and there for delivery are not that much of an issue. Couple of recent orders have included a request to email them and confirm recepit and delivery date, quite happy to do so as the orders only took 8 days from shipping confirmation. I use other R1 suppliers on a more regualr basis but DVDBoxoffice is an old favorite

Of course it all depends on the exchange rate they use on the day, but I always reckoned that anything under $26 is safe, after that it's a lottery, with different shops (even Amazon randomly ship from Germany or the States) being more or less likely to get stopped, and I have had quite a few in the 18-25 quid range get through OK. And as I've only had about half a dozen shipments stopped in my life (out of probably a couple of hundred) I'm not going to make a big deal about it.
Anyone know why £18 is the limit? I'm assuming it's just for the hassle factor of stopping everything - if customs were actually organised, they'd probably try claw back their extra pennies on everything coming in. |
