I have a Sony RDR-HXD860 which has been fine until this week. It has started doing a couple of things:

1) Not recording all the sound on a program (HD)
2) Stops playing after about 20 mins on a program recored on the HD and turns itself off

Does anyone have any suggestions??

Thanks

Switch the Digital Software Update off.

Ah right. But if I turn this off, when (and if) a new updated download comes, won't my machine miss it? Can I do anything now to sort the problem?

Is this problem a Sony or Freeview one? The reason I ask is that I have a normal Freeview box on another TV, which has also been acting up over the past few days (no Ch5 or some others).

Just spoken to Sony (got through within 5 mins!! )

They told me they are aware of the problem affecting a few machines, but they haven't sorted it yet.

My question above still stands. If I turn off the update (which I already have) how will I know when its safe????? (apart from watching this forum).

You got through to Sony within 5mins & got a response?? - I think you had better enter the lottery this week before your luck runs out.
Apart from monitoring this forum for updates you could keep your eye on the Digital TV Group web site for any upcoming download schedules for software upates to receivers:

Further to Pete's post, the following info. found on 'avforums.com' gives some more detail;
*Formal Response from Sony follows!*
Was having the same problem myself so after clearing the HDD as much as possible (1 week later) i cart the drive to my nearest service centre for repair under warranty. The bloke there tells me that since my call last week, they got a bulletin (or something like that) from Sony which reads as follows (paraphrased coz it seems like a lotta effort to type it all out)

The over air download (OAD) which was scheduled somehow dowloaded the s/w for another manufacturers hardware. As a result it causes data corruption and the problem seen by customers. Complaint is likely to be:

For 3G models (RDR-GXD310, RDR-HXD510, 710) "slow" of "no response" or "hang up" when watching a channel on the affected MUX A

For 5G models (RDR-GXD360, RDR-HXD560, 760, 860, 1065) switches off and re-boots during HDD/DVD playback or when watching a channel on the affected MUX A. Also broken or interrupted or partial recordings may appear in the title list for the same program.

For 5G models new OADs to fix the problem are planned as follows:
23-->25Jul on MUX B. customers should set/tune theie product to CBEEBIES (LCN Channel Number 071)
28-->30Jul on MUX 1. customers should set/tune theie product to BBC ONE (LCN Channel Number 001)

for 3G they dont appear to have a fix yet.

As a temp fix you can disable the software download in the menus. BUT REMEMBER TO RE-ENABLE BEFORE THE ABOVE DATES FOR THE PROPER FIX TO DOWNLOAD!!
Updates take around an hour.

Quite who allowed this screw up to happen is beyond me, but hope the above is of use to someone (& thanks to the guy at the sony centre who let me walk away with a copy of the bulletin!) Please feel free to repost in other threads if it'll help someone else out!

Cheers,
Wombie.

Hi Wombie,

Thanks for the info. I'm just a little confused about the OADs for my RDR-HXD860.

Do I need both of these updates or just one of them ?

Regards,
Bernie.

Hi Berno,
Not sure, so I'm going to tune in for both - you can't beat belts & braces.

Thank goodness for these forums!!!! In the old days we would have gone back to Sony with broken machines and wasted loads of time and money.

Long live Digital Spy forums! (and lets hope the updates work!)

By the way....

Can someone explain when a normal update comes through, are you meant to make sure the machine is left on a certain channel number? If so, apart from these wonderful forums, how do people know? Or can the machine sort itself out??

After contacting 2 Sony centres in my area, 1 let slip the name of the company who carries out their repairs, quick as a flash I contacted them and got through to a very helpul engineer.
Apparantly this coming Monday/Tuesday (23/24 July) if you leave your set on and connected, and tune it in to channel 71 which is a Cbeebies channel, there is an upgrade being downloaded to cure the problem.
I would assume though that you would have to enable the Digital software upgrade option in the technical information to be able to receive this.
I will try this before I hand over my dvd to a Sony dealer.

Ok. Well this answers my problems bar one. I am away on holiday when these are being transmitted.

Can I just say record a programme on these dates and that will sort it? I can afford the disc space if it means the drive is updated.

Or will the drive update itself without any effort on my behalf, with the obvious setting of auto download already active.

Leave it switched on or give it to a friend, if you bought it from a sony centre, im sure they will sort it for you. sometimes pays to buy from a shop (and keeps me in a job!)

Yes, I can leave it switched on for the first download but what about changing the channel for the second?

That is why I am suggesting a record channel for each to ensure the system is on during the dates of the transmission.

Just wish it was as cheap, I saved £100 getting my 860 from Amazon but I agree, buying it local would help.

How is anyone who doesn't subscribe to a forum like this supposed to know to have their machine tuned to Cbeebies and BBC1 at these times ?

Seems an odd way to fix a problem they created.
