Few questions about Prince

1) Why has he started calling himself Prince now?

2) why is he giving his album away for free?

3) on a scale of 1-10 what is in your opinion his guitar playing ability (bearing in mind guitar maestros are 10...not your bruce Springsteen types make only 1-2 in my scale)

4) is Pince over rated?

1. Because thats what most people know him as.

2. Because he says he is fed up of the money obsessed music industry and wants to prove a point...what that is I dont know.

3. 8/9 - He is pretty damm immense, not quite on the Hendrix scale though. 1/2? You serious? Prince is a brilliant guitar player!

4. Yes, Purple Rain, When doves cry and 1999 are pretty much the only 3 songs people know from Prince, in the 80's and 90's he was excellent but outshadowed by Michael Jackson, havnt been too impressed by him in the 2000's.

1. He's been called prince for a while again now. He changed his name to highlight the fact that he didnt own his own back catalogue. It belonged to the greedy record comanies that he is now gladly free from.

2. Because he can. He don't need the money. Now we're living in new musical digital age. There is no need to release cds when a lot of new bands offer stuff for free on myspace etc. Most money is made from gigs now. Record companies make all the money from album sales.

3. 10. He is an amazing guitarist. He can play all styles and if you saw him live u'd see for yourself.

4. No he is still relevant. With a back catalogue that most artists would kill for. He is always being quoted as an insipration by new artists. Frankly if you dont have sign of the times in your collection then you dont like music. The end.
Better than Jackson IMO. More prolific, better live. He has released 20 odd albums in last 25 years . Jackson has released 5. You do the maths.

Few questions about Prince

1) Why has he started calling himself Prince now?
Because it is his real name. When he had a dispute with his then record label (Warner Brothers) he changed his name to the symbol as the contract was between Warners and Prince, and if he wasn't Prince anymore then the contract wasn't against him. At the time of the name change he said it would only be until his contract with Warners expired at the end of 1999, so on 1st January 2000 he reverted back to his real name.

2) why is he giving his album away for free?
To get it out to as many people as possible! For years he's said he wanted to be able to give his music away for free, and these days many artists are frustrated that they record an album and their label don't let them release it for months, by which time the artist has often moved on to the next batch of songs but are forced to now promote an "old" record. By giving "Planet Earth" away Prince has got his new album out to millions of people, some of whom maybe haven't heard his music before and so he could gain a whole new audience. It is also a possibility that people may listen to the album, think "this guy is pretty good", and then book concert tickets (at £31.21 a pop it isn't exactly a massive amount to gamble on a ticket, is it?) and also buy some of his back catalogue. Many people (myself included) will get the album free today and will then buy the "proper" CD when it is released as the version released today has no sleeve notes, track listing etc.

3) on a scale of 1-10 what is in your opinion his guitar playing ability (bearing in mind guitar maestros are 10...not your bruce Springsteen types make only 1-2 in my scale)
10. He's a superb guitarist. Some of my friends are guitarists and they almost worship his ability. If you've never seen Prince live you've no idea how good he is.

4) is Pince over rated?
As a live performer he is untouchable. His output in the 1980s is the stuff of legend. Since then he's been patchy, some albums frankly dire (and I've been a huge fan since 1983), but when he's good he's awesome.
