Clarissian,
I've Just read your column & thought I would reply on the forum, rather than a direct email.
I do disagree with some of the things you have said
I think you are spot on with enforcing the rules more strictly & consistantly. However I think that disqualification should be held as a punishment of last resort.
Part of the problem last year, was that the 3 Strikes lacked immediacy. You could be given a strike & go "yeah what??" or "Where's my badge?". BB needs punishments which have effect within the house. Jade not been allowed to nominate is an example, punishing the group by removing alcohol for the transgressions of an individual whould be another. - If you break the rules, you will be unpopular. Also BB must allow the night crew to issue punishments, waiting until the morning for the day shift, allowed multiple transgressions to go unpunished.
Sadly I believe that the show’s producers this BB season will (once again) go for the haft way measure. This is a shame since it makes for the dullest of all possible BB houses.
Last years series was many things, but I would not consider dull to be one of them.
As for the first night. I'm a firm believer in keeping things simple. Put the housemates in, close the doors, watch. We don't need gimmicks or vicious entertainment at the expense of some poor first night evictee.
It is the general view on the forum that we want different housemates from the average media wannabe. Treating housemates with contempt ( which IMO a first night eviction would be) during their stay is not going to encourage people to apply.
The eviction fest that you seem to be proposing is not going to add to the series, people need time to bond. The housemates with each other, & us with them, only once this has happened does it start to get interesting. The pain/tension/emotion of evictions is when it is someone you care about, or hate. I think that if BB really wanted to make the first eviction hurt, do it in the third or forth week, when we are starting to know the housemates.
Strict BB
I think that the tension & stress in the house, should come from within the group, rather than be artificially induced by BB, if BB is too authoritarian, then he runs the risk of becoming the enemy, having the housemates bond as a team against BB rather than a group of individuals competing. To a degree this happened last year, but not so much that it detracted from events within the house.
BB has the power to manipulate the group dynamic, it should be making use of this power.
The housemates are supposed to be isolated from outside influence, this should include BB, last year BB changed the group dynamic by giving the winner of the task power over the others. This would be good to see again.
Things that did work well in series 3, were the importance of the tasks to the hms, & the continued surprises for the hms. Hopefully both of these will continue.
I'm going to stop as I've rambled on too much, but I did like most of the rest of your ideas
cheers
