I've been trying to get into this band now for a few days. I've watched their videos on YouTube, and some I have liked, but some I have to say I hate. Most of their songs seem very long, and whereas I have no problem with epic songs, their longer songs seem to follow no real pattern. I really don't like their instrumentals (at least live) --- someone on YT said that they were just an excuse for pretentious showing-off, and I have to admit I really do agree with this. The likes of "Instrumedly" or "Stream of consciousness" would not be something I would like to listen to on my Zen. They look good live, but that's about it.

On the other side of the coin, ballads like "Hollow years" and "The spirit goes on" are really excellent, and I like them very much.

The question then, to any DT fans, is do I persevere? If most of their music is long, rambling compositions that don't really go anywhere, or long instrumentals, and I have stated I dont like these, should I still try to get into DT for the sake of ballads? Are there others I should be listening to? I've also listened to, is it, "The dark and eternal night"? I really hated that, and that's apparently from their latest album.

Thing is, I think I might be missing out on a good chance to get into a decent band, for the lack of hearing the right examples of their work.

So, any DT fans out there, what's your advice?

Thx!

TH
PS I should say that I'm into most prog-rock (IQ/Marillion/Genesis/Pendragon/Threshold/Silent Edge/Within Temptation etc) and do like long tracks usually (Grendel/Wishing Well/Supper's ready), but I just don't seem to be able to warm to Dream Theater....
