Black women only fashion show: how?
This ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/northwesttonigh...es/index.shtml - far left column, second down) story was on my local news this lunchtime and I was wondering how it was acceptable in this day and age!
"Miss Black Britain" is a beauty contest for black women alone. To me, this is bordering on racism and if there was beauty contest for white women alone, there would be UPROAR. Why does there seem to be double standards? Also, why is this kind of show allowed? Surely all it does is promote segregation and stops mixing of communites. The reason why I started this topic was because of this - I feel we should all be side-by-side and race should be irrelevant. |

I'll tell you how my friend, because they can't get into any mainstream fashion shows or beauty contests. Try picking up Vogue, watching Fashion TV or actually going to a fashion show, I'll give you a fiver for every black model you see and I'll still have shitloads left over. You know how someone won't let you join their club so you start one of your own, well that's why and how.

How long has this fashion show been around?
If they are just making it...it does seem rather racist but if it is a tradition you can't fault them for it. In America for many years Black women weren't allowed to be in Beauty Pagaents so they made their own and nowadays those pageants still exist. It's kinda wrong to say "Well, we will let you in our pageants now so you have to get rid of your traditions and we'll keep ours and not change the title or anything about it except allow Blacks in and make you get rid of your pageants" It's the same with Black Universities in America. They were created out of segreation and it would be wrong for the Government to shut down these traditional Black Colleges like Texas Southern University but keep open the Historically White Schools like Texas A&M just because they had a change of heart 50 years later and let a few Blacks in. If you shut down the Black ones you should do the White ones the same way and just create a new University altogether From what they are saying in the video it seems there is already a "White's Only Fashion Show" pretty much, which Blacks aren't ever really showcased in, but I've never seen an English Beauty Pageant so I dunno how true that is or not. |

I can kind of see what the OP is saying. It IS technically racist to not allow a person of colour to have the same rights/enjoyment as another person of a different colour...a bit like P Diddy having a hissy fit when Mick Hucknall won a award at the MOBO's...because he wasnt black and so Diddy felt he should not have even been there even though its music of black ORIGIN not black artists.
A "white only" beauty pagent would bring cries of racial descrimination Im afraid. As for coloured ladies being in the beauty world, I see many gorgeous women from Iman to Tyra, Naomi, Alex Wok, Nicole from PCD et all flying the flag and showing the world how bloody gorgeous they are. My own school buddy is a very successful model and she is black and never encountered any "lightening" requests from magazine/model agencies. |

How, the OP asks?
Because reverse sexism, racism, etc, is alive and kicking in this country!

Lots of bad things were "a tradition" (ie, they'd been happening for years), but they were stopped. You can't justify racism on the grounds that it's "a tradition". |

You mean like you can't fault Tintin In The Congo, because Tintin books are "a tradition"?

This sort of thing does not help, and simply creates hostility between communities.
The Miss Black Britain beauty contest, or Alex's remarks? |

So do you agree that White Traditional Universities, like even Harvard, should be closed in America or just the Black Universities created?
Just make them all open to anybody, irrespective of race, creed, colour, gender or sexuality. |

Couldn't it just be that the black models aren't "pretty" enough, irrespective of the colour of their skin?
Besides the fashion houses DO NOT pick models based to how good looking they are. A model has a certain posture, good bone structure and be highly photogenic. The fashion world also has had a history as we all know of picking girls who have the "crack-head chic" look. Pale, malnourished and gaunt looking. How many black girls would carry that off? |
