The Black Univerities have always been open to people of all races it was just the White Univerities that wouldn't allow Blacks in because of Jim Crow laws.
That's why I said "Just make them all open to anybody".

Couldn't it just be that the black models aren't "pretty" enough, irrespective of the colour of their skin?
This is why.

Because the people with power hold these type of opinions.

Isn't it more likely the case, that in a country dominated by 90% (or more) white caucasians, that a beauty pageant will reflect the taste of those people?

Would it maybe be correct to assume that in black dominated nations, the same rule would follow? .... and i bet they don't go creating special allocations for white people or having their own pageants!!!

I have to say I can see why black people may need/want their own contest- beauty relates to hair/makeup/fashion and as you can see by so many speciality afro salons/clothe shops black and white beauty industry is quite seperate to cater for our different skin/features/hair and the judges in a mainstream mainly white beauty contest and this contest would be looking out for totally different qualities.

Likewise though I think L'oreal being sued for being racist as they dont use non white people in their ads is so OTT- they make shampoo for white peoples hair, I have black friends and they all use speciality shampoo and products suitable for afro hair and wouldn't dream of using L'oreal type shampoo for the mainstream anyway. So what would be point of using a black model in the ads if the products are not aimed/bought by black people?

Oh come on, i thought it would be blatantly obvious that the comparison would be with a country of similar standards (ok, that may be fictional!!) and not some oppresive regime!!

Modelling really isn't about 'pretty'.

Don't you hate posters who start contentious threads but don't stick around to debate the issue?

That's why I put it in inverted commas.

I wasn't really sure of the criteria, but the general point is the same - couldn't it just be they don't meet the criteria in areas other than skin colour?

We'd have to ask the bookers but personally I don't think so. There's plenty of tall, willowy and interesting looking black men and women around.

But who sets down the criteria? Some people find blonde Northern European types culturally pretty, others find dark haired olived skinned Southern Europeans pretty, others prefer South East Asian attributes, or Southern, Western or East African looks or perhaps Middle Eastern or North African features whilst others prefer the looks of the Indian sub-continent or native American or southern American .... we all have cultural and personal preferences.

How, the OP asks?

Because reverse sexism, racism, etc, is alive and kicking in this country!
Precisely, as any group trying to promote a "white women's fashion show" would soon find out. It is out and out racism pure and simple.

Perhaps if it was held in a predominantly black culture and white women who entered rarely won due to the judges being mainly black people who tended to favour women they found culturally more to their tastes, then it would be acceptable to have a non black women's beauty contest.

About the strength of it, Caucasian judges are going to find Caucasian features most attractive, it's just the way it is.
Come on now what are the chances of a Chinese lady with Chinese features winning Miss World?

As far as I know Black people created this pageant themselves.
I don't understand the fuss various Black hair and beauty contests have been going for years, there are probably Asian ones too.

Oh just had a look at Miss New York Chinese pageant 2007 and I find them all attractive, so my point above might be a bit shaky.

Maybe it's less racist if they're prettier.

Where are all the white men boycotting Miss Black Britain for racism? Why not report it to the CRE? Would anyone take them seriously?

[EDIT] Apparently the CRE has already complained - see http://www.thisistrafford.co.uk/most...itain_2007.php

On seeing that I would have paid no attention to it, but now looking at it it does seem wrong. I don't think its asuch racism as there is no looking down on white people or its not really excluding-more providing a different contest. But yeah it does seem strangely wrong.

Has anyone complained yet about the marital-statusism of this contest? Notice: Miss Black Britain. So, if you're a Mrs or a Ms, forget it; you're not wanted!

Surely it's a celebration of blackness and culture?

black people were disallowed/banned from so many things until recent times , I really have no problem with 'black only' events ... I certainly dont see any racist slants either .

Why use only women for most shampoo adverts isnt that double standard against men

Why does European football only include countries in Europe

Why is AA only set up for alcoholics - shouldn't that be for everyone

Why is the American independence celebrated on the 4th of July surely thats discriminatory against the 3rd of July

The list goes on...

This is definately prooof of double standards
